Ron Johnston wins Bernie Hughes Achievement Award
SOUTH Fremantle had a significant win on Sunday afternoon with Ron Johnston presented with the WAFL Combined Past Players & Officials' most prestigious award, the Bernie Hughes Achievement Award.
Each year, the WAFL Combined Past Players & Officials Association presents the Bernie Hughes Achievement Award to a past player or official at a WAFL club who is deemed the most dedicated and committed to his team during a season.
It was South Fremantle life member Johnston who was announced as the 2016 winner in acknowledgement of his tireless efforts as a volunteer at the Bulldogs. He was inducted as a life member of South Fremantle in 2013.
It is the sixth year that the Bernie Hughes Achievement Award has been presented with Johnston becoming the second winner to represent South Fremantle following the hard working Bob Bright who was the inaugural winner of the award.
The South Fremantle Football Club will take possession of the perpetual trophy that has been mounted to coincide with the presentation of the annual Bernie Hughes Achievement Award.
Johnston was nominated for the award by South Fremantle's Past Players & Officials Association president Ray Van Burgel.
The South Fremantle Football Club acknowledges and appreciates the efforts of Ray to assist in ensuring Johnston's hard work and dedication went recognised.
Johnston continues to be an active member of the South Fremantle Past Players & Officials Association. He is a regular on match days in the Stephen Michael Room at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
Along with fellow volunteer Karen Allgood, Johnston is also instrumental in the successful running of the Friday night member's night.
The timing of the award proved perfect for Johnston as well with him having family in Perth with him from his native Scotland. They were on hand to see him receive his award.
The South Fremantle Football Club commends Johnston for his tireless efforts on behalf of the Bulldogs and we all congratulate him on a much-deserved award.
