ONE South Fremantle player thriving on the increased opportunities in 2019 is Jacob Dragovich and the Bulldogs' leading ball winner this season is even happier with the way the team is performing heading into Saturday's top-of-the-table clash with Subiaco.

Dragovich came through the ranks impressively at colts level with South Fremantle including winning the fairest and best award in 2013 and finishing as runner-up in 2014 so it was always going to be a natural progression for him to become a league footballer.

And over the last four years in a variety of different roles, Dragovich has played some good league football for South Fremantle to the point where coming into 2019 he had 62 games already under his belt.

SOUTH Fremantle lost consecutive matches for the first time in 2019 with Saturday's defeat to the West Coast Eagles at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the Bulldogs slipping from second position on the WAFL ladder in the process.

The Bulldogs' seven-game winning run came to an end the previous week with a 33-point defeat to Subiaco and they were unable to bounce back suffering a 21-point loss also on home turf to the Eagles on Saturday.

That means South Fremantle now sits in third position after Round 12 of the 2019 WAFL season but with a chance to reclaim second spot with a win this Saturday against Claremont at Claremont Oval.

SOUTH Fremantle takes on Claremont in the annual NAIDOC Round contest at Claremont Oval on Saturday looking to stop their losing slide at two and returning to second spot on the WAFL ladder.

While Claremont and South Fremantle started the NAIDOC Round tradition, right across the five matches in Round 13 of the 2019 Optus WAFL Premiership Season, all 10 competing teams will be wearing specially designed Aboriginal jumpers as part of the celebration of NAIDOC Week.

Having started in 2007 with Claremont and South Fremantle creating an annual traditional for meeting in NAIDOC Week and playing for the Jimmy Melbourne Cup, it has become one of the highlights of any WAFL season for the entire competition to take part in.

BROCK Higgins couldn’t have been happier to have made his home with South Fremantle and he couldn’t have possibly invested more into settling into life at the Bulldogs which is why now reaching 100 games with the club means so much to him.

Higgins has now played 130 WAFL games but Saturday will be his 100th with South Fremantle having started his career at East Perth and making those initial 30 appearances.

But it's at South Fremantle where Higgins has made his mark since arriving in 2014 and having been such a key part of developing the strong culture that has seen the Bulldogs reach three consecutive preliminary finals and currently sit second in 2019, getting to 100 games with the club means the world to him.

SOUTH Fremantle is back home at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday to host the West Coast Eagles with the Bulldogs determined to bounce back from last week's loss to maintain their hold on second position on the WAFL ladder.

The Bulldogs suffered just their second loss of the season last Saturday at the hands of Subiaco on the back of a seven-game winning streak, but with Claremont right on their hammer on the ladder, they do need to keep winning to maintain their hold on second position.

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley couldn’t be prouder of the Bulldogs' fighting qualities to overcome three significant injuries to win the WA Day Foundation Derby and continue a tremendous start to the season heading into a testing period.

There were a few questions surrounding South Fremantle coming into the 2019 season following the departures of Ashton Hams, Cory Dell'Olio, Ryan Cook, Ben Saunders, Shane Hockey, Jarrod Parry and Matthew Parker following reaching three preliminary finals in-a-row.

South Fremantle then had a bit of a slow start to the season despite a Round 1 win over Swan Districts before losing at home the next week in another nail-biter against Perth.

SOUTH Fremantle's impressive seven-game winning streak came to an end at the hands of Subiaco in wet conditions at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in Round 11 of the WAFL season on Saturday.

South Fremantle came into the contest as the form team in the competition having not only won seven straight matches and eight of nine for the season, but that one lone loss to Perth could have easily gone the way of the Bulldogs as well.

However, wet conditions greeted the teams on Saturday at the port and it was Subiaco who handled them better in the finish to end up winning 13.9 (87) to 8.6 (54).

A great effort was made on Saturday night for both female teams to come away with wins in some seriously trying conditions, that at times looked more like water polo than football.

It was a real credit to both teams in the way that they played out the game, neither side wanted to miss out on the 4 points and Subiaco took on the Bulldogs right to the end.

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the Round 11 WAFL loss to Subiaco and looking ahead to this Saturday clash at Fremantle Community Bank Oval against the West Coast Eagles.

QUESTION: You haven’t been in this position for a long time, probably last year's preliminary final where you've lost a game quite comfortably. What did you make of it?
ANSWER: We've been pretty good for a while but whether or not we rolled into the game, I'm not sure, but we certainly didn’t adjust early and made some silly mistakes which allowed them to score early. Then we were playing catch up from there. They were probably much better and harder at the footy than us for the majority of the game, but I thought our boys in the second half hung in there and kept fighting. But at the end of the day, I think the scoreboard is a pretty good reflection of the game.

Q: They played in a really wet game too two weeks ago and handled it well while you haven’t played in a game that wet all year, did that have any sort of impact?
A: Maybe, I don’t know. But we made a lot of simple skill errors, dropped marks and didn’t adjust to the conditions. Even right to the end there were some mistakes being made that were about not adjusting to the conditions. But we've got a lot of young guys playing and a lot of guys who haven’t played much footy so that's to be expected against a really experienced group. Our guys will learn a lot.
