WA FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME
Author: South Fremantle Football Club
The Bulldogs were proudly represented at the 18th annual West Australian Football Hall of Fame evening, with two South Fremantle greats recognised on one of WA football’s biggest stages.
South Fremantle champion Peter Matera was elevated to Legend Status, while premiership defender James Clement was officially inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Matera was renowned for his exceptional speed, agility and skill, along with his unforgettable premiership success with the West Coast Eagles in 1992 and 1994. His five-goal performance in the 1992 AFL Grand Final earned him the Norm Smith Medal, marking one of the most iconic moments in Western Australian football history.
Beyond his decorated playing career, Matera continued to contribute to the game through coaching roles with East Perth Football Club and Swan Districts Football Club, further cementing his legacy within Western Australian football.
Matera’s ability to influence games and inspire teammates embodies the Hall of Fame’s criteria for Legend Status, leaving a lasting impact on the sport.
Former South Fremantle Football Club player James Clement was one of seven inductees into the Hall of Fame on the night.
Clement played a combined 230 AFL games with the Fremantle Football Club and Collingwood Football Club, establishing himself as one of the competition’s most reliable and respected defenders.
During his time at Collingwood, Clement won two Copeland Trophy awards as the club’s Best and Fairest and earned All-Australian selection on two occasions.
