RD 4 WAFLW PREVIEW | v CLAREMONT
South Fremantle have had a draw, a loss and a win over the opening three rounds of the WAFLW season ahead of playing host to the reigning premiers Claremont on Sunday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
It’s been quite the rollercoaster ride to start the season for the Bulldogs in the WAFLW beginning with the dominant derby win against East Fremantle before a loss on Good Friday to the undefeated Swan Districts, and then a draw last week against Perth.
Now South Fremantle remain at home this Sunday looking for a second win of the season when they take on the premiers of three of the past four seasons, Claremont, at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the game getting underway at 12:10pm.
Following the first up win and loss in the opening two weeks of the season, South Fremantle were on track for a win for a lot of last week’s match up against Perth also on their home deck.
They were again leading by a goal in the dying stages after a goal to Madi Hadley but Perth were able to secure the draw with a goal at the death thanks to Amy Trindade.
Now it’s a significant test on Sunday for the Bulldogs up against a Claremont team who have played in the last four WAFLW grand finals on the way to winning premierships in 2022, 2024 and 2025.
The Tigers did suffer a loss to start this season in a grand final rematch against Swan Districts but have hit back the past two weeks with wins against West Perth by just two points and then by 70 points last week at home to Peel Thunder.
Despite how much Claremont have been the dominant team in the WAFLW competition over recent years, South Fremantle did manage to cause the upset with the 12-point win against them in Round 14 last year at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
Now the Bulldogs will be looking to make it back-to-back wins against the Tigers and to get a second win of 2026 on the board this season in the process.
The Rogers Cup match up between South Fremantle and Claremont will get the day’s action underway on Sunday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval starting at 10:05am.
The Bulldogs have lost the opening three matches of the season in the Rogers Cup as they attempt to get on the board for the first time in 2026 on Sunday against a Claremont team who have won two of their opening three matches.
In last week’s 53-point defeat against Perth, South Fremantle’s goals were kicked by Khesan Starr, Gracie-Lee Briggs and Mackenzie Chapple while Zoe Antonelli, Alice Warburton, Niamh Sherry and Katy Elliott were impressive performers.
Claremont are coming off a two-point win against Peel Thunder where they kicked the only two goals of the last quarter.
Savannah Muir-Thompson kicked two goals in that win for the Tigers with goals also to Jorja Foster, Amberly Osborne and Indi Coates-Ahomiro.
