WAFLW | BULLDOGS PRODUCE FLYING FINISH

South Fremantle were down at three quarter-time but kicked the first four goals of the last term to score the crucial 13-point WAFLW victory against Subiaco at home on Saturday afternoon.

The Bulldogs played host to the Lions in the second last round of the WAFLW season on Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the Bulldogs having a chance to further consolidate their finals spot while the Lions needed to win to keep their hopes alive.

Subiaco were then leading by two points at quarter-time before South Fremantle were up six at half-time and then it was the Lions with a seven-point advantage by three quarter-time.

South Fremantle came out and kicked the first four goals of the last quarter on the way to the 9.6 (60) to 7.5 (47) victory that has them in third position with one round to go with nine wins, five wins and a draw for the season.

Kiana Lee is now three games into her WAFLW career with South Fremantle having come across from South Australia where she was playing with Glenelg and even played for the SANFLW in the State game earlier this year.

She kicked another four goals from 14 kicks and seven marks in the win for the Bulldogs with Madi Hadley also kicking three goals and Shannyn Pomersbach two.

TJ Mulder also racked up another 23 possessions for South Fremantle, Makaela Tuhakaraina 19, Liusaidh Gilchrist 15, Ash Gomes 14, Hunter Cronin 13 and Tara Stribley 12 while Kate Newson had 39 hit outs in the ruck.

It was a crucial game in the context of the season for both teams and Subiaco had the first couple of scoring shots but it was South Fremantle with the opening goal courtesy of Shannyn Pomersbach at the 10-minute mark.

The Lions responded with a goal to Annabel Johnson, though, and that saw the visitors leading by two points at quarter-time.

South Fremantle got in front with an early goal in the second quarter from Madi Hadley but the Lions responded to reclaim the lead thanks to a goal to Marley Kelman.

Kiana Lee then kicked her first of the day for the Bulldogs just before half-time to put the home team in front by that margin going into the main break.

Subiaco had a fast start to the third quarter with three goals inside the opening seven minutes to be back on top by 12 points before South Fremantle responded thanks to goals to Pomersbach and Lee.

But Subiaco kicked the last goal of the third quarter to go into the last change leading by seven points.

That left South Fremantle with plenty of work to do but just over a minute into the last quarter and South Fremantle drew back within a point with a goal to Hadley.

The Bulldogs then took charge from there with two more goals to Lee and another to Hadley to open up a 19-point advantage and end up scoring the 13-point victory.

The day’s action on Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval got underway with the Rogers Cup contest and it was Subiaco beating South Fremantle 6.10 (46) to 4.3 (27).

Subiaco did get the better of the start away from home with two goals to one in the first term to be leading by eight points at quarter-time.

South Fremantle did manage a second goal in the second quarter but Subiaco kicked two more too to go into half-time with the 19-point edge.

The Lions kicked the only goal of the third quarter and then the Bulldogs managed two goals to finish off in the last term, but it didn’t stop Subiaco securing the 19-point victory.

The result means that with one game remaining in the season South Fremantle are currently sitting in seventh position in the Rogers Cup with a 5-10 record and the best they could finish is sixth with a win against Claremont.
