Player Column – Josh Pullman Round 6

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

THE two wins in the league and reserves last weekend against Claremont were important. The senior sides are putting together some solid football recently, and it’s great to be a part of.

Although winning games is a good outcome, our focus has been working hard on the small things we can control before we even arrive at the ground on game day.

Earlier this season, our leadership coach Bruce Willis introduced the leadership group to the importance of ‘marginal gains’ in our preparation.

Often talked about but rarely acted on, these seemingly small elements include things like driving up our training standards, ensuring honest and clear feedback within the club, accountability, social events, and regulating a professional environment.

When done ruthlessly well, these are the parts that help generate team cohesion, healthy competition for spots, and help to ensure everyone brings their best on game day. It’s added a new dimension to our culture at the Kennel.

Outside of the engine at South Fremantle, it was awesome to see Tallan Ames reach his 250th game. He’s put together an impressive and decorated career, and I’m sure his experience will be valuable as Swan Districts look to build on a great start to their season.

As a former teammate, current work colleague and current opposition player, I’ve learnt a lot from the way he goes about it. Among many things, I think he’s built a strong reputation amongst his peers for his on-field leadership, ability to prioritise what’s important in football and in life, and his ability to set the pace at training, on game day, and social events. Especially at social events.

With a 10-day break, our next hit-out is the Anzac Day Derby against East Fremantle.

Momentum can be a cruel mistress, so after a break over the long weekend to recharge, our focus returns to preparing well and getting ready for another important game against an old rival.
