RD 7 PREVIEW | v SUBIACO
Author: South Fremantle Football Club
South Fremantle is back in action at home at Fremantle Community Bank Oval this Saturday following the WAFL’s State game triumph taking on Subiaco.
The WAFL competition resumes with Round 7 this weekend after taking a break for the triumphant State game against the SANFL at Adelaide Oval last Saturday.
The WAFL representative team was able to snap a six-game losing streak against the SANFL with the 30-point victory including a commanding second half performance with eight goals to four after half-time.
South Fremantle were well represented in that triumph too with Ethan Hughes finishing with 19 possessions, Chad Pearson 15 (eight marks), Jamaine Jones 13 and Noah Strom seven (three tackles).
Those four players now come back into the Bulldogs fold this week for Saturday’s match up with Subiaco at Fremantle Community Bank Oval starting at 2:30pm.
South Fremantle come into the game sitting in second position on the WAFL ladder with a 5-1 record to be only percentage behind the top-placed East Perth.
The Bulldogs did suffer a first loss of the season three weeks ago to West Coast, but responded impressively prior to the State game with the win over Claremont by 17 points at Revo Fitness Stadium.
South Fremantle now has the chance to even claim top spot depending on other results this weekend ahead of next week’s traditional WA Day derby against old foes East Fremantle.
Subiaco arrives at Fremantle Community Bank Oval for Saturday’s game currently sitting in second last place with a 1-5 record and to only be 0.14 per cent ahead of last ranked West Coast Eagles.
Subiaco has now lost its past four matches since a win over the Eagles including going down to Swan Districts prior to the State game break under lights at Sullivan Logistics Stadium.
It has been a mixed bag of results in recent years for South Fremantle against Subiaco with the Bulldogs winning both encounters in 2024 by a combined 51 points, but it was the Lions winning both clashes in 2023 by a combined 42.
South Fremantle also won each match up in 2022 by a combined 96 points but prior to that it was three straight wins for Subiaco including in both the second semi-final and grand final of 2021.
Coming off that win two weeks ago against Claremont, South Fremantle has added Riley Colborne, Dylan Main, Roan O’Hehir and Nick Stuhldreier to the squad with no outs at this stage.
Subiaco is attempting to bounce back from a big loss to Swan Districts and from that team, Michael Braut, Marlin Corbett, Jedd Edwards, Jordan Faraone, Ben Golding and Tyler Senge are into the team.
Going out for the Lions are Wil Hickmott, Connor Faraone, Jacob Wagenknecht, Richard Bartlett, Ky Franceschini and Corey Bellouard.
The day’s action at Fremantle Community Bank Oval against Subiaco begins with the colts match up that will start at 9:15am.
The Bulldogs remain in top position in the colts with a 4-1 record and will put that hold on first place on the line when they play host to the second last placed Subiaco who have currently won two of their five matches in 2025.
Prior to the week off, South Fremantle scored a dominant 69-point win against Claremont to continue its impressive form to start the season in the colts while Subiaco come into Saturday’s match up also fresh off a win at home against Swan Districts by nine points.
The reserves match between South Fremantle and Subiaco will then follow at 11:45am with precious little separating the two teams so far in 2025 with the Bulldogs sitting fourth and the Lions fifth.
South Fremantle is currently just ahead of Subiaco on percentage with both teams sitting on 3-2 records coming into the Round 7 match up with the Bulldogs suffering a tight loss to Claremont a fortnight ago while the Lions won a thriller at home to Swan Districts.
