RED & WHITE ARCHIVES: HONOURING SFFC WOMEN

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

History has been made. For the first time ever, WAFLW players have been contracted and from Round 1, shall be paid. A landmark moment in the evolution of women’s football in Western Australia. This milestone is not only a significant achievement for our Club and competition, but a huge step forward for women in sport across the country.

Women’s football in WA began its formal journey in 1987 with the formation of the West Australian Women’s Football League (WAWFL). What started as a grassroots competition grew steadily, driven by trailblazing players and volunteers who believed in the future of the women’s game.

South Fremantle integrated with the former South Fremantle Women’s Football Club in 2018, and proudly joined the WAFLW competition in 2019, further strengthening the Club’s legacy while providing a pathway for talented female footballers.

The inclusion of female football has enriched the Bulldogs, and made South Fremantle stronger and better equipped to provide greater opportunity to play, coach, officiate or support our great game. The “one-club” model enjoyed at South is a result of hard work, acceptance and a commitment to ensuring opportunities for all.

Now, in 2025, the Bulldogs’ WAFLW squad enters a season unlike any before, one where their dedication is not only celebrated but valued with professional contracts.

This is more than a season; it’s the beginning of a new chapter. As our WAFLW players run out onto the field, they carry the hopes of those who paved the way, broke new ground for women’s sport, and inspired the next generation to dream big.
