WAFLW ROUND 2 PREVIEW v PERTH

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

South Fremantle will be part of another piece of WAFLW history on Saturday evening when taking on competition newcomers, Perth, at Mineral Resources Park.

Perth has entered the WAFLW competition for the first time in 2025 and after playing its first game on the road in Round 1, Saturday evening will be their inaugural home match at the Lathlain venue.

The game between the Bulldogs and Demons will get underway at Mineral Resources Park from 5:10pm on Saturday evening following the men’s reserves match, and prior to the WAFL league contest.

South Fremantle started the new season last Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in a home derby and eventually beat East Fremantle by three points in a heart stopper.

Despite having only kicked one goal to three quarter-time, the Bulldogs stormed home with four goals in the last four minutes of the game to win to open the new season in the most dramatic fashion.

Zoe Huggett was the hero for South Fremantle kicking three of the team’s five goals for the game including the match winner just before the siren sounded ahead of some wild celebrations.

While she will never forget that experience of kicking the winning goal in a derby and all the attention that it provided in the days following, Huggett is now firmly focused on not taking Perth lightly this week as are the rest of her teammates.

“It’s exciting with Perth obviously new to the competition and they did have a bit of a rough outing against Peel on Saturday, but we’ve been there as the new kids on the block and we know we can’t take them for granted,” Huggett said on The Kennel on 91.3 SportFM.

“We won’t go into the game cocky or arrogant or anything after the win against East Freo. It will be more so just about switching on to Perth and their strengths, and what we can do to try and break them to hopefully get the same outcome.

“Hopefully not by three points and by a little more comfortably, but we’re certainly not taking them for granted.”

From that team that beat East Fremantle in last Saturday’s derby, South Fremantle has added Jasmine Bazeley, Hannah Blyth, Renee Morgan, Caitlin Pears and Tara Stribley to the squad to face the Demons.

The only out at this stage for the clash with Perth is Eva Flynn.

Perth started its life in the WAFLW competition with a 50-point loss to Peel Thunder in Mandurah where they were able to kick a goal and finished with six behinds.

From that team, the Demons have added Paige Bower, Fina Dethlefsen, Sarah Guilfoyle, Ivy Harding, Chanelle Myburgh, Chloe Seivwright and Breanna Wills while Natalie House, Kailey Secomb, Mia Carlshausen and Caitlin Bassett go out.

Meanwhile, the Round 2 Rogers Cup match up between South Fremantle and Perth will take place on Friday night also at Mineral Resources Park starting at 7pm.

The Bulldogs are fresh off a 24-point Round 1 Rogers Cup victory last Saturday against East Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval while the Demons had a narrow defeat in Mandurah against Peel Thuner by eight points.

The two teams did battle twice last year in the Rogers Cup with Perth scoring the 21-point win in Round 2 before South Fremantle got one back in Round 10 with a two-point nail-biting triumph.
