THANK YOU LUFF AND VERRIER

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

With a proud but heavy heart, the South Fremantle Football Club would like to officially announce the retirement of Chris Luff and Steven Verrier and thank them for their time and service to the Premier Family Club.

Both 2020 Premiership players will be going their separate ways in 2021, with Verrier taking a new path and signing in the Perth Amateur League for Baldivis Football Club, while Chris intends to retire from football.

Both players have had very integral roles in the Bulldogs success over recent years and have very different football stories.

Steven Verrier has played for South Fremantle throughout his entire WAFL career, coming through our Talent pathway. He made is League debut in 2011 before being drafted by the Richmond Football Club (AFL) in 2012. He returned to South Fremantle in 2014 and in total has reached an impressive 119 League games for the Club.

Steve will be fondly remembered for his dedication and contribution to the Club, a hard at the ball player who always put the team first.

General Manager Football and Community Marty Atkins explains that Steve was living in Baldivis and had been committing to coming up for training;
“He received an employment opportunity down there that was too good to refuse so he let us know at the start of the pre-season that he wouldn’t be going around again this year. He’s been a great servant to the footy club so he goes with our best wishes” Atkins said, fondly.

Chris Luff came to South Fremantle from the Peel Football Club in 2014 starting in our Reserves side before becoming a regular League contributor. After 3 years playing WAFL football he was initially forced to retire in 2017 due to ongoing complications stemming from concussion.

After 2 years away from football he decided to bravely make a return to the Kennel for one further season so that he could finish his football career on his own terms. He was an integral part of the 2020 Premiership Campaign and bows out on top, and as one of the premier defenders in the competition.

Atkins expressed his gratitude to Chris, knowing what a loyal servant to the club he has been;

“Chris is an incredibly popular member of the playing group, and it was so heart-warming for everyone to see him end his career with a Premiership Medal after coming back from all those concussion issues” Atkins remarked.

Chris Luff works alongside past player Brendan Verrier creating awareness and providing education around the issues of concussion in sport. If you would like to learn more about the important work both of these past players have been doing please check them out at “In-between the Ears” on Facebook

The South Fremantle Football Club is extremely proud to have had both Steven and Chris as long-term contributors to the South Fremantle Family. They will always be part of the Club and we wish them the very best for their respective paths ahead.
