WAFLW – BULLDOGS BEAT FALCONS IN TIGHT ONE

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

South Fremantle kicked the last goal of the game at the 11-minute mark of the first quarter and that was enough for the four-point WAFLW victory over West Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

The two teams did battle with fourth position potentially on the line in the contest with little separating them on the WAFLW ladder.

West Perth kicked the game’s first goal and South Fremantle the second, both in the first quarter, and there wouldn’t be another goal the rest of the game with the Bulldogs ending up winning 1.8 (14) to 1.4 (10).

It could be a significant result in the context of the season too with West Perth remaining in fourth position and South Fremantle fifth, but there’s now only percentage separating them with both teams sitting on 5-4 records by the end of Round 10.

South Fremantle’s lone goal in the game was kicked by Zoe Huggett and she now has 14 of them in her eight appearances this season.

Bailey Hunt also racked up 28 possessions for the Bulldogs, Tahleah Mulder 23, Liusaidh Gilchrist 15, Madizen Wilkins 15, Hunter Cronin 14 and Hannah Burt 13 while Charlie Vandenberg finished with eight to go with 25 hit outs and five tackles.

West Perth kicked the first goal of the game at the eight-minute mark of the first quarter thanks to Lexi Strachan before South Fremantle responded less than three minutes later when Zoe Huggett kicked truly.

You could have been excused for thinking both teams were on track to kick a host of goals throughout the contest, but as it turned out those two goals in the first 11 minutes would prove to be the only two kicked for the entire game.

South Fremantle did manage to kick three behinds after that first goal and as a result led by three points at quarter-time.

That margin remained the same by half-time with a behind apiece in the second quarter and then it was just two points by three quarter-time with West Perth scoring the only behind of the third frame.

Eva Flynn kicked a behind to start the fourth quarter for South Fremantle with Shannyn Pomersbach and Sophie Rodger also adding minor scores with the Bulldogs ending up holding on for the four-point victory.

The day’s action at Fremantle Community Bank Oval got underway with the Rogers Cup match up which saw West Perth end up prevailing over South Fremantle 10.10 (70) to 4.1 (25).

It is a Falcons team who have won the last two Rogers Cup premiership and who remains in top spot so far in 2025 but it was a goal apiece in the first quarter.

West Perth then kicked the only three goals of the second term to open up a 24-point lead by half-time before the Bulldogs did manage three goals in the second half, but couldn’t stop the Falcons going on to score the 45-point victory.

Zarlya Yarran ended up kicking two goals for South Fremantle with one each from Khesan Starr and Ava Hutchinson.

South Fremantle are now sitting in fifth position on the Rogers Cup ladder by the end of Round 10 with four wins, four losses and a draw ahead of a Round 11 match up with Perth on Sunday back at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
