Author: South Fremantle Football Club
South Fremantle did plenty right in the WAFLW clash with Peel Thunder in Mandurah on Saturday afternoon aside from putting the pull through the middle of the sticks in the eventual 14-point defeat.
It was the second last round of the 2025 WAFLW season with South Fremantle needing the win to try and break back into the top four as they took on the Thunder at Lane Group Stadium.
In tough conditions, South Fremantle only managed to kick the one goal for the game despite having 13 scoring shots to seven from Peel along with having six extra entries inside the forward 50.
The result leaves the Bulldogs a game and percentage behind the fourth placed East Fremantle, but finals are still not out of the equation.
A win for South Fremantle against West Perth this Friday night and loss for East Fremantle against Swan Districts, and there’s still a chance for the Bulldogs to play finals in 2025.
South Fremantle’s lone goal came from Annalie Polimeno while Tahleah Mulder finished with 23 possessions and six tackles while Hunter Cronin gathered 20 disposals, Renee Morgan 19, Liusaidh Gilchrist 18, Tara Stribley 16, Hannah Burt 15 and Bailey Hunt 15.
The conditions were tricky in Mandurah for the game on Saturday afternoon and neither team managed to kick a goal in the first quarter with South Fremantle leading by a point with two behinds to one in the opening term from Peel.
South Fremantle managed another three behinds in the second term but Peel kicked the first goal of the game and that saw the Thunder take a two-point advantage into the half-time break.
The Bulldogs continued to pepper the goals but couldn’t put one through the middle with another four behinds in the third quarter with the Thunder kicking two goals to be leading by 10 points at three quarter-time.
South Fremantle finally kicked a goal to start the final term thanks to Annalie Polimeno but that proved the only goal of the game from the Bulldogs with the Thunder ending up winning by 14 points.
It turned out to be a thrilling Rogers Cup contest at Lane Group Stadium on Saturday afternoon with South Fremantle kicking the last goal of the game to snatch the 3.3 (21) to 2.7 (19) victory from Peel Thunder.
Peel kicked the only two goals of the opening quarter while holding South Fremantle scoreless before the Bulldogs responded with two goals to one behind in the second term with scores all level by half-time.
Peel then kicked four behinds in the third quarter and South Fremantle went scoreless, but the Bulldogs then left it late but got the only goal of the final term to secure the two-point victory in a nail-biting finish.
The win keeps South Fremantle’s finals hopes alive in the Rogers Cup with one game to play where they will need to beat the league leading West Perth and hope that Claremont loses to Subiaco.
All three of South Fremantle’s goals were kicked by Nicole Taylor-Thorpe to give her 17 goals in nine matches this season.
