WAFLW PRE-SEASON REVIEW

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

We recently caught up with Sean Pollard ( Manager, Female Football & Administration ) to discuss the WAFLW Pre-Season so far. Here’s his views:

What has been the primary focus of pre-season for the program?

We’ve had a big focus on skills and development, with the aim of improving on last year’s Preliminary Final & Grand Final finishes. Adding a Monday night gym session at Notre Dame University to the weekly schedule for the League team has given the players an opportunity to focus solely on their conditioning in an elite environment, which has seen great results so far.

What do you think is the biggest change you’ve seen in the group?

I’ve noticed a desire to improve and embrace high performance that is growing with every session. There’s a determination to make our female programs the best in the state which is beginning to drive everything we do on and off the field.

Who are the new/returning players we need to look out for?

Madizen Wilkins is training well this year after coming over from the Fremantle Dockers, and Shannyn Pomersbach has been consistently among our best. Hunter Cronin is embracing a new role and really finding her voice amongst the group and as always, we’ve seen Lauren Vecchio leading from the front.

Who do you think is set for their breakout year?

Poppy James has been tremendous for our Rogers side and, as an 18-year-old, is set to take the next step. Additionally, Shaya and Zarlya Yarran are showing glimpses of sublime skills, taking part in our WAFLW match sims and fitting in extremely well.

Which fixture match-up are you most looking forward to for 2024?

Round 1 vs East Fremantle will be a huge opportunity to put football back on the map for 2024. As this will be a home game for South Fremantle, the Club is excited about kicking the season off with a bang and the League side will be looking to cause a boilover against last year’s Premiers.

Is there any new staff/support staff embracing the Club and what it has to offer?

Lauren O’Connor is making a positive impact as an Assistant Coach for our Rogers side, impressing with her enthusiasm and footy knowledge. From a League perspective: Robbie Turnbull has made substantial strides working with the players on their skills and providing fantastic energy on the track.

We call ourselves the ‘Premier Family Club,’ how have you seen these values displayed?

On a personal note, my family and I have felt completely embraced at South Fremantle since we moved back to WA from Victoria late last year. The support shown to us from all involved at the Club, from staff to coaches to directors, has been a shining display of the values of the ‘Premier Family Club’.
