Coach Post Match – Todd Curley Round 7

Wednesday, May 4, 2016 - 3:05 PM - by Chris Pike

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the Bulldogs' first loss of the 2016 WAFL season against Subiaco on Saturday and looking ahead to this Saturday's clash with Claremont at the Showground.

QUESTION: What did you take out of that game when you got back into it to be two points down in the last quarter after a slow start?
ANSWER: I think we won a bit more of our own ball after half-time. We got smashed in the contested ball in the first half and their pressure was pretty good. Our first half was pretty poor so the positive was that at half-time we thought we had a lot of growth in us. It was a good effort to get back within two points, but when you have to work that hard to get back into the game it takes a few tickets.

Q: It could have been different had you hit the lead but Subiaco kicked away again?
A: We know what they're about. They play consistently well and grind games out. They are a very well organised and an experienced team. They played four quarters and we couldn’t go with them. That's OK, we're obviously not at their level yet but we'll keep working hard to get there.

Bulldogs go down fighting against Lions

Monday, May 2, 2016 - 11:02 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle's league and reserves teams put their undefeated starts to the season on the line at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday and both came up short against Subiaco.

South Fremantle's reserves saw its 14-game winning streak come to an end courtesy of the Lions to start the day at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in a tight affair.

The Bulldogs' league side then did battle in the meeting of the two undefeated sides and despite South Fremantle closing to within two points early in the last quarter after earlier trailing by 37 points, the Lions ended up prevailing 15.16 (106) to 10.15 (75).

Bulldogs welcome brand new Fiat Ducato

Friday, April 29, 2016 - 9:13 PM

SOUTH Fremantle might have recruited strongly on the field for the 2016 WAFL season but there has been another new addition this year that has been generously donated by Welshpool Fiat Professional and WA Hino.

Shane Hockey, Steven Edwards, Mason Shaw, Blaine Johnson and Dylan Main might all be playing huge roles on the field as new arrivals for the undefeated Bulldogs so far this season.

But regular attendees of South Fremantle games so far this season would have noticed another significant addition in the form of a new property van that has been donated by Paul McGovern.

Round 7 Preview v Subiaco

Friday, April 29, 2016 - 3:42 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle and Subiaco have both made unbeaten starts to the 2016 season and put those perfect records on the line when they meet at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

Subiaco is coming off winning the last two premierships and it's no surprise to see the Lions win their opening five matches against Peel Thunder, East Perth, West Perth, Perth and Swan Districts by an average of 34 points.

But for South Fremantle, the Bulldogs are attempting to make the finals for the first time since 2011 and they have been supremely impressive in victories over West Perth, Swan Districts, East Perth and Perth, and then a heart stopping seven-point win over East Fremantle in the Anzac Derby.

Player Column – Ben Saunders Round 6

Friday, April 29, 2016 - 2:57 PM - by Ben Saunders

EVERYTHING is going pretty smoothly at the moment as a club and it's happy days right now, but it's only five games in and I don’t think we have really proven anything. We have Subi this week and that's a massive test and it's exciting to find out where we are at in comparison to them because they are the benchmark.

We did have a pretty good pre-season last year and the start to the season so we didn’t really change too much this year. We did load up a little more with the help of our strength and conditioning guys and then coming into the year I don’t know if anything in particular was done differently but the players we have picked up have made a massive difference. Those additions can quickly take you from an average team to being right up there competing, but we can't get too excited yet.

Personally, I've cut out my choc milks and iced coffees. I've gone cold turkey on them. I think it was last year when I did my hammy that I realised after having a chat to the doc and Swanny that dropping weight would be the best thing for me and the team. I've stuck pretty hard to a diet that Rach wrote up for me and it wasn’t even that bad, I could have bacon and eggs for breakfast.

Bulldogs look forward to battle of the undefeated teams

Thursday, April 28, 2016 - 2:43 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle has had a blistering start to the 2016 WAFL season but the Bulldogs are yet to take on two-time reigning premiers Subiaco and coach Todd Curley is confident they are ready for that challenge this Saturday.

South Fremantle has won its opening five games of the 2016 season with an average winning margin of 46 points while holding the opposition to only 55 points a game with East Fremantle's 87 points and seven-point margin the best any opponent has done against them to date.

The Bulldogs have looked tremendous beating West Perth, Swan Districts, East Perth, Perth and then in the Anzac Derby East Fremantle, but there's no question the biggest challenge is coming this Saturday in the form of Subiaco at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

Coach Post Match – Todd Curley Round 6

Wednesday, April 27, 2016 - 10:31 PM - by Chris Pike

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the thrilling ANZAC Derby win over East Fremantle and looking ahead to this Saturday's clash of the undefeated teams against Subiaco at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

QUESTION: You did look on top for most of the day but couldn't finish them off in front of goal. Then you had to find something late after they hit the front and you found a way to win?
ANSWER: Full credit to them for keeping on coming all day, which we discussed that they would do. We probably didn’t finish off as well as we would have liked to keep the door open and they almost came charging in but it was really pleasing that we responded in the last couple of minutes to get over the line.

Q: The last couple of minutes was pretty hectic after Perham kicked a goal to put them in front. But Schloithe found some space to take a mark and somehow put it through and then you held on?
A: It was pretty pleasing. We haven’t had a real close result this year or played in that sort of pressure. I thought we dealt with it OK when we were behind and when we got in front. It was a good learning experience for a lot of our guys, but we still have a lot to work on which is also pleasing.
