Younger Bulldogs aim for greater consistency, more wins in 2016

Tuesday, March 15, 2016 - 11:47 AM - by Chris Pike

TODD Curley's first season in charge of South Fremantle was a rollercoaster ride that didn’t end how he hoped but the Bulldogs coach is looking forward to a 2016 campaign that leads to more consistency and more wins.

Curley's time at the helm of South Fremantle got off to a tremendous start in 2015 with wins over West Perth, Perth and Claremont. But that was followed by losses to Swan Districts, Subiaco and East Fremantle.

Three wins in the next four games had the Bulldogs right in the mix for a return to finals action for the first time since 2011, but they only won two of their last 10 matches and lost the last five to end up with eight wins, 12 losses and in seventh position.

The 28-year-old has played 92 games with South Fremantle with 71 of those as captain while along the way winning two WJ Hughes Medals and representing Western Australia in four of his five seasons.

Hockey, Edwards, Matera making mark already with Bulldogs

Wednesday, March 9, 2016 - 12:57 AM - by Chris Pike

Adding a hard-nosed, tough and experienced midfielder was high on South Fremantle's shopping list ahead of the 2016 WAFL season and that's exactly what Shane Hockey provides with Jordan Matera and Steven Edwards providing plenty of talent and excitement to the Bulldogs squad as well.

South Fremantle's midfield has plenty of natural ball winners of high quality with the likes of Ashton Hams, Haiden Schloithe, Tim Kelly and Ryan Cook but one area that coach Todd Curley felt needed strengthening was a tough, tenacious in and under midfielder.

Hockey had earned a reputation as a tough-as-nails ball winner in the VFL with Frankston where he was captain up until the end of 2015.

Bulldogs bank on four youngsters returning from AFL

Wednesday, March 9, 2016 - 12:39 AM - by Chris Pike

BACKING in youth from South Fremantle's zone continues to be the Bulldogs' No. 1 focus and that has only been enhanced with the return to the club of four players from the AFL system.

Blaine Johnson (Carlton), Mason Shaw (Port Adelaide), Dylan Main (West Coast) and Tom Vandeleur (Fremantle) have all returned to South Fremantle for the 2016 WAFL season after finding themselves off AFL lists at the end of 2015.

It is a credit to South Fremantle that the club was able to secure the signatures of all four local products in an age when it's increasingly difficult to ensure the return of players to their original clubs with the other teams in the WAFL quick to swoop.

Round 1 time change against West Perth

Thursday, March 3, 2016 - 10:10 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle's 2016 WAFL season opener has been changed to an afternoon game to accommodate the Channel 7 broadcast from Fremantle Oval.

The Bulldogs were set to host West Perth under lights at the port to open the 2016 season on Saturday March 19. However, it was determined the lighting couldn’t be increased to a sufficient broadcast standard without affecting playability.

The fixture remains at Fremantle Oval on Saturday March 19 but instead of a night clash, it will now be in the afternoon as South Fremantle hosts West Perth with the Garlic Munchers Cup at stake.

Bulldogs surround Academy Program with tremendous coaching resources

Wednesday, March 2, 2016 - 2:45 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle's commitment to its development program and helping young players turn into strong senior players and people off the football field has been further enhanced with the new coaching staff announcement.

The Bulldogs decided to restructure the development program structure for the 2016 season despite the success the club has had in producing players that have turned into AFL and senior WAFL players in recent years.

The first step in that was the announcement of a new Academy Program coach Mark Foster. The former South Fremantle league player and reserves premiership player has taken over not only as coach of the colts for 2016, but also will oversee the coaching of all the club's development teams.

Curley looking forward to improved Bulldogs in 2016

Tuesday, February 16, 2016 - 2:57 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley is looking forward to his second season at the helm of the Bulldogs and with a significantly more youthful squad at his disposal, he is sensing their excitement levels lifting with proper games not far away.

Curley took over as coach of South Fremantle for the 2015 season and while it was a year that showed promise, it ultimately was another finals-less result for a fourth straight season and that's not something anyone at the Bulldogs is willing to accept.

While some experience has left with the likes of Craig White, Paul Mugambwa, James Sellar and Kyle Hams departing with Cory Dell'Olio (suspended) and Jarrod Parry (knee) to miss all of 2016, Curley likes the group the Bulldogs have put together.
