PLAYER COLUMN – BROCK HIGGINS ROUND 3

Saturday, August 1, 2020 - 2:10 AM - by Brock Higgins

It would be fair to say it's been quite the interesting year for us all so far and from a football sense, I was in the best shape I've been in for years and we were looking great as a team back in March, but now here we are and it's amazing how quickly things feel back to normal.

Going back a few months, we had done the whole pre-season and everyone was fit, happy and healthy, and looking forward to the season. We had just played a scratch match against ourselves on a Friday night and the next week we were going to play the first of two proper pre-season games, and then it would be Round 1 so everything was ready to go.

So we played that Friday night scratch match and everyone was starting to whisper about how the season might get shutdown and everything. Then the next day we got the word that it had been so that was definitely interesting.

SOUTH Fremantle's women will host their third straight game on Sunday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, this time welcoming Claremont as they begin life in the WAFL Women's competition.

South Fremantle was granted its entry into the WAFL Women's competition just on the eve of the 2020 WAFLW Premiership Season getting underway after being delayed due to the COVID-19 global pandemic.

It hasn’t been the start to life in the new competition that the Bulldogs wanted with losses at home to East Fremantle and Peel Thunder, but Sunday afternoon presents another opportunity against Claremont.

ROUND 3 PREVIEW V CLAREMONT

Friday, July 31, 2020 - 4:02 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle has started the 2020 WAFL Premiership Season in fine style but there's no question the biggest test for the Bulldogs yet will come this Saturday at the hands of Claremont.

South Fremantle is back home to play Claremont on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in a clash where the two teams come in having won their opening two matches in 2020.

That means that the winner will race out to a 3-0 start and sit clear on top of the WAFL ladder and in the shortened season due to COVID-19, that would put them in a tremendous spot to lay a claim to a place in the finals.

COACH POST MATCH - TODD CURLEY ROUND 2

Thursday, July 30, 2020 - 10:30 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley spoke after Saturday's hard fought eight-point victory against West Perth at Joondalup's Provident Financial Oval.

QUESTION: It obviously wasn’t the prettiest game but in a lot of ways a pretty brave win by your team?
ANSWER: I thought we started pretty well and just didn’t take advantage. We kicked 1.5 from set shots in the first quarter and I think they kicked two goals from only three inside 50s to that put us under pressure. And then their pressure was pretty good and they got on top of us for large portions of the game as well, but in the end we hung in and found a way. That's the most important thing.

Q: At this point of the year given the amount of time we've had off are you just happy to take the four points and worry about your game style later on?
A: Well we did play some pretty attractive footy last week and I thought the conditions were pretty tough today for both teams so it was always going to be a bit more of a scrap. In the end we were able to convert when we needed to. No doubt it's important to win because you certainly don't want to be chasing this year and you want to try and be playing from in front both on the scoreboard in games, and on the ladder. To jump out 2-0 is a really pleasing start.

BETTER BULLDOGS SIGNS DESPITE FINAL SCORE

Monday, July 27, 2020 - 1:47 PM - by Chris Pike

THE scoreboard might not have been ideal again at Fremantle Community Bank Oval for South Fremantle in their second ever WAFL Women's match on Sunday, but the signs are getting better as the Bulldogs adjust to the new level.

It was relatively short warning that South Fremantle received that it would be granted a full license a year earlier than expected to be part of the WAFLW season, and the first two weeks have been challenging but the signs of growth and development are already there.

For the second straight week to open life in the WAFLW competition, South Fremantle did fail to trouble the scorers but that doesn't mean there wasn’t some encouraging individual performers, and some signs that rapid development is happening within the playing group.

BULLDOGS KEEP WINNING RUN OVER FALCONS, AT JOONDALUP GOING

Monday, July 27, 2020 - 12:21 PM - by Chris Pike

GOALS might have been tough to come by on Saturday afternoon, but ultimately South Fremantle continued its good history recently against West Perth and at the Joondalup venue to come away with the hard-earned eight-point victory.

The Bulldogs made it two-from-two to start the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season with the eventual 5.9 (39) to 4.7 (31) victory on Saturday against the Falcons at Joondalup's Provident Financial Oval.

South Fremantle kicked the only goal of the final quarter to come away with the eight-point win to back up the previous Saturday's 95-point victory against East Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval to open the season.

Round 2 WAFLW Preview v Peel Thunder

Saturday, July 25, 2020 - 1:44 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle might not have quite made the debut in the WAFL Women's competition they were hoping for, but it's back to Fremantle Community Bank Oval this Sunday with the Bulldogs hosting Peel Thunder.

The Bulldogs were granted a full license to join the WAFLW competition in 2020 a year earlier than expected only around a month away from the season getting underway, and it's fair to say the Round 1 result wasn’t what anyone was hoping for.

But the fact that South Fremantle now has a team in the competition and can begin to grow and develop is a positive, and there is a real chance to put in a better showing on the field this Sunday against a Peel Thunder team that finished with last year's wooden spoon.

Round 2 Preview v West Perth

Friday, July 24, 2020 - 5:52 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle couldn’t have started the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season in more emphatic fashion than last Saturday and now the Bulldogs will look to continue that on Saturday at a ground they've enjoyed great success with.

After the delayed opening to the 2020 WAFL season thanks to COVID-19, last Saturday was an afternoon to remember for the Bulldogs in front of more than 4000 fans at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

In what will be the only derby for the season, the Bulldogs beat East Fremantle for a 10th straight time to the tune of 95 points on what was also the 150th game of Sandover Medallist and dual fairest and best winner Haiden Schloithe.

Player Column – Chris Luff Round 2

Thursday, July 23, 2020 - 9:56 PM - by Chris Luff

PLAYING my first WAFL game since 2017 on Saturday and with the way everything finished, it's not something I thought I would get the chance to play at this level again. Three years is a pretty long time to be out, but before you know it and the way things play out, you are back here and thinking about it now, I'm pretty proud I made it back.

I've spent two years at Northam Railways Football Club after that last season I had at South Freo and then I got to play up in Darwin with the Tiwi Bombers along with Ashton Hams and I suppose playing that footy gave me the confidence that my head was recovered, and there were no on-going effects from the concussions. They weren’t hindering me and I was able to enjoy playing footy again.

It just reignited my passion for it all again and then at the beginning of this year, Coronavirus hits and then the stars just sort of lined up with it being a shorter season and I was continuing my training, and keeping fit. I knew that side of it would be OK, it was just whether or not I still had something to offer. I've never been the best player on the team or anything like that, I just want to play a role and help the team be better, and there was an opportunity there for me.
