Round 2 Preview v West Perth

Friday, July 24, 2020 - 5:52 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle couldn’t have started the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season in more emphatic fashion than last Saturday and now the Bulldogs will look to continue that on Saturday at a ground they've enjoyed great success with.

After the delayed opening to the 2020 WAFL season thanks to COVID-19, last Saturday was an afternoon to remember for the Bulldogs in front of more than 4000 fans at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

In what will be the only derby for the season, the Bulldogs beat East Fremantle for a 10th straight time to the tune of 95 points on what was also the 150th game of Sandover Medallist and dual fairest and best winner Haiden Schloithe.

Player Column – Chris Luff Round 2

Thursday, July 23, 2020 - 9:56 PM - by Chris Luff

PLAYING my first WAFL game since 2017 on Saturday and with the way everything finished, it's not something I thought I would get the chance to play at this level again. Three years is a pretty long time to be out, but before you know it and the way things play out, you are back here and thinking about it now, I'm pretty proud I made it back.

I've spent two years at Northam Railways Football Club after that last season I had at South Freo and then I got to play up in Darwin with the Tiwi Bombers along with Ashton Hams and I suppose playing that footy gave me the confidence that my head was recovered, and there were no on-going effects from the concussions. They weren’t hindering me and I was able to enjoy playing footy again.

It just reignited my passion for it all again and then at the beginning of this year, Coronavirus hits and then the stars just sort of lined up with it being a shorter season and I was continuing my training, and keeping fit. I knew that side of it would be OK, it was just whether or not I still had something to offer. I've never been the best player on the team or anything like that, I just want to play a role and help the team be better, and there was an opportunity there for me.

Coach Q and A – Todd Curley Round 1

Wednesday, July 22, 2020 - 4:20 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley speaking after Saturday's 95-point Round 1 WAFL victory against East Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, which was the Bulldogs' 10th consecutive derby win against the Sharks.

QUESTION: After what we've been through nobody knew how they would come out for Round 1, but really in every way possible that went perfectly?
ANSWER:
It's been a really strange year and lead in, and all of that stuff which has been well spoken about, but I thought all through our boys stuck together and did what they could. I thought it was a really even performance so I certainly won't argue that it was a good start.

Q: It was an even performance in terms of all 22 players contributed but also across the whole four quarters, you really didn’t drop off at any point?
A: And we were pleased about that and the players themselves spoke about it after the game how they were really keen to run it out. We had a few challenges once we lost Dylan obviously we were one short and there were a couple of other blokes we were trying to manage as well. But it was pleasing that it looked like we were still running right to the end so we were really happy.

MORE HISTORY MADE BY BULLDOGS IN WAFLW DEBUT

Monday, July 20, 2020 - 11:21 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle made history on Sunday by playing its first ever match in the WAFL Women's competition and while it might have been a loss to East Fremantle, it's the beginning of a new era at the Bulldogs.

There is so much excitement with the direction the South Fremantle Football Club is heading in and it was another significant milestone on Sunday with the Bulldogs playing in the WAFLW competition for the first time only a month after having been granted its full license to become the sixth club.

South Fremantle received its immediate license to join the 2020 WAFLW season a year earlier than initially anticipated, and there would be no better way for the Bulldogs to mark their debut than with a derby on home turf against East Fremantle.

STUNNING SEASON-OPENING DERBY WIN FOR BULLDOGS

Monday, July 20, 2020 - 10:28 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle started the 2020 WAFL season in the best possible way with a 95-point victory to make it 10 straight wins against East Fremantle in a complete performance on Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

It was only fitting that the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season resumed with what will be the only Fremantle Derby of the season, but it was South Fremantle who made quite the statement with a 95-point win against East Fremantle.

It's hard to imagine a larger contrast from South Fremantle's last game of 2019 now to their first of 2020. The Bulldogs lost last year's Grand Final to Subiaco by 96 points but started off 2020 in the best possible way with the 99-point turnaround to hammer the Sharks on Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

ROUND 1 WAFLW PREVIEW V EAST FREMANTLE

Saturday, July 18, 2020 - 8:53 AM - by Chris Pike

THE massive weekend at Fremantle Community Bank Oval to mark the return of football to Western Australia continues on Sunday with a full day of women's action highlighted by South Fremantle's debut in the Optus WAFLW Premiership Season.

There's great excitement right around football in WA this weekend with the return of AFL football to Optus Stadium for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and with the WAFL competition opening with South Fremantle hosting East Fremantle on Saturday.

But that's far from all there is to be looking forward to as the WAFLW competition for 2020 gets underway and for the first time South Fremantle is going to be involved with the Bulldogs having been granted their full license a year earlier than previously anticipated.

ROUND 1 PREVIEW V EAST FREMANTLE

Friday, July 17, 2020 - 4:30 PM - by Chris Pike

THE time has finally arrived for the opening of the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season and not only do South Fremantle host East Fremantle, but the day is going to be a Festival of Football at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.

COVID-19 has played havoc with the 2020 WAFL season just like the pandemic has had such an impact on so much of the world, but now the time has come this Saturday for the action to return.

There's no better place for that to happen than at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and with the only Fremantle Derby that will take place in 2020 with South Fremantle hosting East Fremantle.

MAIN'S LEADERSHIP GROWTH ON SHOW WITH BULLDOGS

Thursday, July 16, 2020 - 3:57 PM - by Chris Pike

NOW entering his third season as South Fremantle captain, Dylan Main is emerging impressively into a strong leader at the Bulldogs and that's evidenced by his approach to helping his group not just forget last year's Grand Final, but now make amends for it.

They were massive shoes to fill for Main when he was appointed captain ahead of the 2018 WAFL season taking over from Ryan Cook who had been the longest serving skipper in the long and rich history of the South Fremantle Football Club that is now in its 120th season.

But the fact that his first season as captain still saw him having Cook playing alongside him to help him out along with other strong, experienced leaders like Ashton Hams, Shane Hockey, Cory Dell'Olio, Adam McIntosh, Shaun Bewick and company allowed for a smooth transition.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP BIGGEST HONOUR IN SCHLOITHE'S CAREER

Monday, July 13, 2020 - 4:10 PM - by Chris Pike

THE wait between game 149 and 150 has been quite the arduous one but Haiden Schloithe couldn’t be prouder or more excited to bring up the milestone this Saturday to open the 2020 WAFL season as he qualifies for life membership at South Fremantle.

When Schloithe was growing up in Katanning dreaming of playing for South Fremantle one day and then idolising what a couple of future teammates were doing for the Bulldogs a decade ago in the form of Kyle and Ashton Hams, never did he think he could achieve what he could.

If you had told a young Haiden Schloithe a decade a go that entering the 2020 season, he would have already won a Sandover Medal, three WJ Hughes Medal as South Fremantle's fairest and best and played for Western Australia three times, he would have thought you were joking.
