SOUTH Fremantle remains at Fremantle Community Bank Oval this Saturday following the bye to host an East Perth team on a five-game losing run but the Bulldogs need to keep winning to retain second position on the WAFL ladder.

South Fremantle and East Perth first played one another back in Round 7 this season straight out of the State game break and at that time, both teams were on impressive four-game winning streaks and were battling over second position on the ladder behind Subiaco.

The Bulldogs won that day by 68 points and have consolidated second position on the ladder since with a 7-3 record prior to last week's bye after a 35-point win at home against Peel Thunder.

PERSONALLY, I was very honoured to be voted in as captain of South Fremantle, a team I have grown up barracking for my whole life and playing for since starting back in the development squads. 

After only being notified a couple of weeks before the vote that our longest serving captain, in Ryan Cook, would not be in the running for captaincy it all happened relatively quickly. 

Cook believed it was time for him to sit back and help nurture a new generation of leaders into the role and fortunately that meant I got the opportunity with Mason Shaw as vice-captain.

HE is one of South Fremantle's great weapons with his flexibility and versatility, and Bulldogs hard man Steve Verrier is looking forward to the second half of the WAFL season both personally and for his team.

Verrier has now played 78 matches with South Fremantle, 77 of which have been since returning to the Bulldogs after spending two years at Richmond in the AFL, and remains an important player given his toughness, versatility and ability to virtually play in any position on the field.

He did battle injuries in 2017 limiting him to 14 matches on the back of a standout 2016 season where he played all 23 games, including all three finals culminating in the preliminary final, and finished third in fairest and best voting to Shane Hockey and Marlion Pickett.

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the Round 11 WAFL victory for the Bulldogs over Peel Thunder despite the absence of Ben Saunders, Mason Shaw, Blaine Johnson and Shane Hockey ahead of the Round 12 bye and Round 13 clash with East Perth.

QUESTION: Coming off the loss last week and then being without a host of key players, you'd have to be happy with that performance?
ANSWER: We were really pleased. It was a bit of an arm-wrestle there for the first 15 minutes, then we were able to get a bit of score on board which was reward for working pretty hard early. We were really pleased and we did run out of gas a bit late with a few sore boys and Mason hurting himself 30 seconds before the first bounce and pretty much playing no part. But across the board I thought it was a pretty even performance and some of our leaders, like Schloithe and Suban, really stood up for us.
