WAFLW | BULLDOGS GET BACK TO WINNING

South Fremantle returned to the winner’s list in the WAFLW with four goals to two in the second half to end up beating Subiaco on Sunday by 16 points.

Having had a draw and two defeats over the past three weeks, South Fremantle arrived at Leederville’s Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Sunday looking to get that winning feeling back.

After neither team kicked a goal in the first quarter and it was a goal apiece in the second, the Bulldogs kicked two goals to one in the third term, and two one in the fourth to score the 5.7 (37) to 3.3 (21) victory.

The win improves South Fremantle to a 2-3 record with a draw now after the opening six rounds of the WAFLW season.

Shannyn Pomersbach continues to provide a strong option in the forward-line for South Fremantle this season and kicked another three goals from eight kicks while laying two tackles.

Ash Gomes also collected 26 possessions to go with five marks and five inside-50 entries for the Bulldogs.

Tash Entwistle finished with 24 disposals and six tackles with Tara Stribley gathering 18 touches, Makaela Tuhakaraina 18, Brianna Cleggett 15, Madi Evans 15, Ella Matthews 14, Hunter Cronin 11 and Jasmine Bazeley 11 to go with eight tackles.

Neither team managed to kick a goal in the opening quarter with South Fremantle scoring four behinds and Subiaco one leading up to quarter-time.

That all changed to start the second quarter with Subiaco managing the first goal of the contest before just before half-time South Fremantle were on the board too when Shannyn Pomersbach kicked truly.

That saw the Bulldogs clinging to the three-point lead by half-time before Subiaco took the lead with the first goal of the second half only for the Bulldogs to quickly respond courtesy of Tara Stribley.

Pomersbach then kicked her second and that saw South Fremantle leading by 10 points going into three quarter-time.

The Lions kept things interesting with the first goal once more of the final quarter but again the Bulldogs responded with goals to Charlie Vandenberg and a third to Pomersbach to secure the 16-point victory.

It was the Rogers Cup match up getting things underway at Sullivan Logistics Stadium on Sunday morning and it was Subiaco ending up beating South Fremantle 4.9 (33) to 1.5 (11).

It was a goal apiece in the first quarter with the scores all level at the first break but then Subiaco kicked the only goal of the second term, and only one of the third with the Bulldogs unable to score across the two quarters.

That saw the Lions open up a 15-point lead by three quarter-time before completing the 22-point win with the Bulldogs managing the four behinds in the final quarter.

South Fremantle now have a 1-5 record after the opening six rounds of the Rogers Cup season.

Among the strong performers in the contest for the Bulldogs were Katy Elliott, Holly Barnes, Alexis Edgley and Hannah Floyd.
