COMMUNITY WEEK 2023

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

Last week, the Seniors had a Bye Round which gave the opportunity for the players to go out to a junior club in the South Fremantle District and surprise a few excited upcoming footballers. They ran scratch matches, took part in drills, held Q&As and some even had opportunities to sign posters, boots, and guernseys!

Within our Regional and Metro district, we had 56 Senior Men and 12 WAFLW players covering 31 teams!

Some young kids even wore their South Fremantle Kit and got to meet their favourite players. Jacob Dragovich had a very special visit to South Coogee, where he was given the opportunity to train with his nephew Koby. Koby even wore Jacob’s #2 ANZAC Guernsey that was gifted to him from Jacob for his recent birthday!

There were students as young as pre-AusKick all the way to Year 12. The players were also able to share their journey from community level, all the way to South Fremantle. Many of the kids were inspired by our players stories and loved hearing how they two were once at clubs like theirs.

We had some players visiting clubs they originated from and others helping their teammates. The clubs were very appreciative of all the players’ help, and they did a great job with the kids.

WAFLW teams also went down to some training sessions and helped, which the clubs were very appreciative of considering the intense leadup to finals. The girls at Jandakot Jets got to be part of a team bonding session with the Club, a rewarding night for all involved.
The initiative was brought to the Club by Football Manager Charlie Burke who saw it as a vital role for our players, creating inspiration and aspiration for the next generation of footballers within our zone.

“Community clubs is where it all starts and often ends for any footballer, so staying connected to our clubs will ensure the game is healthy for years to come” Burke said.

Community Week will be an annual event across our Men’s and Women’s programs, so next year we will be encouraging interested clubs to nominate a team for players to visit during Community Week 2024.

The experience was enjoyed by all involved and is something we enthusiastically look forward to doing again.

Special thanks to Kelmscott, Booragoon, Cockburn, Fremantle City Dockers, Hammond Park, Jandakot Jets, Kardinya, Kwinana, Mundijong, Roleystone, Bibra Lake, South Coogee, Boddington, and Armadale for hosting the players!

And of course a big thank you to all our players and staff who went down to a session.

As well as the players going out to training, the teams also wore their own community club guernseys to training. They all represented their community teams very well.
