South Fremantle Women pull away with two wins v Subiaco

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

BOTH South Fremantle Women’s teams continued their strong start to the 2019 WAFL Women’s season for Round 6 in their matches against Subiaco on Sunday at Leederville Oval.

The Reserves and Rogers Cup Youth Girls teams knew it would be a physical and tough encounter that saw both teams fighting until the final siren.

Subiaco are a very structured side like all the league teams in the competition and when sides like these are faced, South Fremantle need to be 100 per cent ready for the challenge.

The reserves’ back-line stood up and competed well all day, Makayla Cocking and Chelsea Waideman who are in both in their first seasons of football keep improving each week.

Key players for the day included Chae Salbie who was tagged across half-back because of the drive she was getting for us.

Through the middle of the Ground, Eilish Grundon (flash) was a standout and Tash Vaughn-Taylor on the wing fought hard all day.

Subiaco just didn’t allow them to get the space that they usually get.

Miley, Tasha McAlpine and Naomi Barrett, all competed hard across half-forward and gave us options going into the forward-line.

Leo O’Kane’s last 10-minute effort helped to keep the ball in our forward-line was a great team commitment.

South Fremantle Women’s Reserves side won the game 3.6 (24) to 3.2 (20).

The Rogers Cup Youth Girls also got off to a great start in the first quarter with a slight breeze, leading at quarter-time 2.4 (16) to 0. The Bulldogs midfielders were on top and the forwards were getting plenty of supply of the football.

At half time, a big effort was asked of the girls and with some soul searching the girls came out and began to win more stoppages kicking two more goals.

The last quarter saw Subiaco kicking with the breeze and South knew they had to dig deep and work hard, as we were two rotations down and some girls had been sick all week.

The girls showed true Bulldog spirit and kicked a goal into the breeze that locked the game down.

The Youth Girls final score was in South Fremantle’s favour, with the Bulldogs beating Subiaco 5.7 (37) to 2.8 (20).

We are getting great numbers to training, but just need to be working harder. Both teams have a great opportunity to be playing in the finals this year but teams need to keep improving so that we are competitive against the league clubs.
