RED & WHITE ARCHIVES: FREMANTLE OVAL – HOME

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

Fremantle Oval, originally known as Barracks Green Field, has been central to South Fremantle Football Club’s history since its establishment in 1900. Located between Fremantle Hospital, Fremantle Markets, and Fremantle Prison, the oval’s prime position has made it a focal point for the community.

The oval’s significance is further highlighted by the historic Victoria Pavilion, designed by architect Frederick William Burwell and opened in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. This grandstand has witnessed countless memorable moments in the club’s history.

Over the years, Fremantle Oval has hosted numerous significant events, including the 2020 WAFL Grand Final, where South Fremantle secured a thrilling victory over Claremont.

The ground also served as the training and administration base for the Fremantle Dockers from 1995 to 2017.

As the club celebrates 125 years, Fremantle Oval remains more than just a football ground—it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit and rich heritage of the South Fremantle Football Club.
