WAFL | BULLDOGS HOLD OUT LIONS

South Fremantle dominated the second and third quarters to build a 41-point lead and then had to survive seven goals in the last term from Subiaco to hold on for the crucial one-point thrilling win on Saturday.

It was a crucial clash in the context of the season for both teams at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday with each sitting on 6-5 records coming into it and placed fourth and fifth on the WAFL ladder.

South Fremantle kicked seven goals to nil through the second and third quarters to build a 41-point lead by three quarter-time before withstanding seven goals in the last term from Subiaco to hold on and prevail 10.13 (73) to 11.6 (72).

South Fremantle are trying to find some different avenues to goal at the moment. It’s the small forwards doing the damage with Kyle Russell kicking three goals this time around for just the second time in his 64-game WAFL career.

Roan O’Hehir was the other multiple goal scorer in the game for South Fremantle with two to go with 16 possessions, five marks, four tackles and three inside-50 entries.

Jake Florenca then finished with 26 possessions, Glenn Byron 22, Matthew Parker 22 (12 tackles), Isiah Winder 19, Lewis Rayson 18, Ethan Hughes 17 and Chad Pearson 17.

It was a crucial match up for both teams and Subiaco did make a flying start away from home with the opening three goals in the first 12 minutes, and they added a fourth in the 18-minute to already be leading by 20 points.

South Fremantle had to respond and did just that with three goals in the last six minutes with the first from Jamaine Jones and then two from Kyle Russell in less than three minutes.

That saw the Bulldogs only trailing by two points at quarter-time before keeping that momentum going with the first goal of the second term through Roan O’Hehir even if it did take almost 10 minutes.

The Bulldogs took further control of the contest before half-time with goals to Aaron Drage and Isiah Winder to take a 16-point advantage into the half-time break.

South Fremantle remained in control through the third quarter with the only four goals as well firstly thanks to Russell and O’Hehir before Matthew Parker and Glenn Byron joined in.

That saw the Bulldogs well on top by 41 points at three quarter-time but things got a little hairy late with Subiaco kicking the only seven goals of the final including one from Charlie Burke at the 30-minute mark, but South Fremantle held on for the crucial one-point victory.

The Colts got things underway at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday morning with South Fremantle going on to beat Subiaco 8.11 (59) to 6.8 (44).

It was a goal apiece in the first quarter before South Fremantle kicked two to one in the second term to go into half-time leading by four points.

It was then two goals apiece again in the third term but the Bulldogs did kick away with three goals to two in the last quarter on the way to the 15-point win to stay on top of the Colts with a 9-2 record.

It was all single goalkickers in the win for South Fremantle with Chace Vanderhoek collecting 26 possessions, Jack McAuliffe 19, Hudson Graham 17, Jarra Mallard 16, Riley Stannard 13, Kobe Clucas 13, Aidan Hedge 13 and Conor Bushe-Jones 11 along with 34 hit outs.

The Reserves clash was next up at Fremantle Community Bank Oval and it was a thriller in the finish with Cooper Clarke-Dehring kicking a late goal to secure South Fremantle the 11.13 (79) to 11.8 (74) victory over Subiaco.

South Fremantle kicked four goals to three in the first quarter and then by half-time scores were level before Subiaco were up by five points at three quarter-time.

Subiaco were then 18 points up 12 minutes into the last term before the last three goals went the way of the Bulldogs to Mitch Geier, Bailey Harbour and then Clarke-Dehring to secure the five-point win.

South Fremantle improve to a 5-6 record as a result of the win to stay in the finals hunt in the Reserves with Harbour, Clarke-Dehring and the returning Solomon James all kicking two goals each.

Ashton Ferreira racked up 33 possessions, Toby Dodds 29, Mitch Geier 27, Jack Green 22, Lachlan Princi 22, Taj Longmuir 22, Millar Rank 19 and Cohen Frith 19.
