Round 3 WAFLW Preview v Claremont

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

SOUTH Fremantle hits the road for the first time this Optus WAFLW Premiership Season on Sunday for a full day of action against Claremont at Revo Fitness Stadium.

South Fremantle’s WAFLW League team has played their first two matches of the 2021 season at Fremantle Community Bank Oval against Subiaco and Swan Districts.

Meanwhile, the Reserves played Subiaco in Round 1 but had the second round bye and the reigning premier Youth Girls team have had a brilliant start to their premiership defence with Rogers Cup wins at home to Subiaco and away to East Perth.

Now the three South Fremantle female football teams are all back in action on the same day at the same venue again on Sunday with the Bulldogs taking on the Tigers at Claremont’s Revo Fitness Stadium.

The Youth Girls contest between South Fremantle and Claremont begins at 9.20am before the Reserves gets underway at 11.05am and then the League contest begins at 1.00pm.

What a remarkable start to the Rogers Cup season it has been for South Fremantle on the back of winning the premiership in 2020.

The Youth Girls opened up the 2021 season with a thumping 77-point win against Subiaco on the back of six goals from Poppy Stockwell before backing up last week beating East Perth by 104 points at Leederville Oval.

The Bulldogs have kicked 28 goals across the opening two matches and now they take on a Claremont team on Sunday who beat Swan Districts first up and then lost to East Fremantle by seven points last Sunday.

South Fremantle’s reserves started the season in impressive fashion beating Subiaco by 23 points before then having the bye in Round 2 ahead of resuming their campaign against Claremont on Sunday.

It’s then time for the WAFLW League battle. The Tigers started their 2021 campaign kicking just the one goal in a narrow loss to Swan Districts before bouncing back to beat East Fremantle by eight points last Sunday.

They have only kicked three goals across their opening two matches but also only conceded three at the same time.

South Fremantle did open the new season impressive fashion only losing to Subiaco by three points at home but last week was tougher losing to Swan Districts by 53 points.

But Sunday presents another chance for them to claim that elusive first ever WAFLW victory.

Claremont has made a couple of changes to its side that beat East Fremantle a week ago with Adele Arnup and Madeleine Scanlon coming into the side with Emma Lendrum and Jessica Low going out.

There are a few changes again for South Fremantle as the Bulldogs hunt that WAFLW breakthrough victory.

Gabrielle Canicosa, Sarah Du Plessis and Liusaidh Gilchrist all come into the team to take on Swan Districts at Claremont Oval on Sunday while Clair Edwards, Chelsea Parnell, Poppy Stockwell and Sarah Wright go out.
