RD 15 PREVIEW | v SWAN DISTRICTS

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

South Fremantle has handed Subiaco and Claremont their first WAFLW defeats of the season over the past three weeks and now can move into third position with a win against Swan Districts on Sunday.

The Bulldogs are now on a three-game winning streak this WAFLW season but not only that, it included being the first team to beat Subiaco back in Round 12 and then not only did they hand Claremont a first defeat of 2025 last week, it was a first South Fremantle win against the Tigers.

That gives the Bulldogs terrific confidence and momentum now heading into Sunday’s clash with the third placed Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval, with the WAFLW contest getting underway at 2:10pm.

It’s a crucial game for both teams with South Fremantle sitting in fourth position with an 8-5 record following those three straight wins against Subiaco, East Perth and Claremont.

Swan Districts to still sit in front of the Bulldogs, though, on the WAFLW ladder with an 8-4 record but the winner of Sunday’s match up will move clear in third position with just the three rounds of the home and away season remaining for 2025.

The last time the two teams met was back in Round 8 of this WAFLW season which saw Swan Districts score the 8.5 (53) to 6.3 (39) victory over South Fremantle at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

Despite that loss at home, Zoe Huggett kicked three goals for the Bulldogs while Tahleah Mulder racked up 22 possessions while laying 14 tackles with Hannah Burt having 13 hit outs to go with 17 disposals.

Bailey Hunt also ended up with 16 possessions and 15 tackles, and Renee Morgan 14 touches and 17 tackles.

South Fremantle co-captain Hunter Cronin is excited with how things are coming together late in the season for the Bulldogs with the wins over Subiaco and Claremont, and is looking to keep the momentum going against Swan Districts this Saturday at Bassendean.

“It’s six seasons in the making to get that one done so we’re pretty ecstatic to be able to get over Claremont who are always one of the best sides in the comp, so we’re a bit on cloud nine at the moment,” Cronin told The Kennel on 91.3 SportFM.

“We’ve now been able to scalp some big wins in the competition the past couple of weeks so we’re building something really special coming into the back end of the season. I’m really proud of the group and we’ll look to continue to build and keep scalping the big wins to crack finals.

“The belief in this group is just growing week by week and it’s so exciting to see the girls start to belief in this process, and the system we’re working on with the coaches, and this is another big challenge this week that we’re all super pumped for to try and continue building our momentum.”

Meanwhile, the Rogers Cup contest with South Fremantle heading to Steel Blue Oval to take on Swan Districts will get proceedings underway on Sunday afternoon at 12pm.

It’s also a crucial game in the context of the season for both teams and it’s a chance for South Fremantle to potentially move back into the top four if they are able to secure a victory.

The Bulldogs come into the Round 15 match up sitting in fifth position on the Rogers Cup ladder with six wins, six losses and a draw.

That has them just half a game behind the fourth placed Claremont and two games behind their opponents on Sunday, Swan Districts who are third with eight wins, three losses and a draw.

Last time the two teams met in the Rogers Cup was also in Round 8 at Fremantle Community Bank Oval where they played out a draw with South Fremantle scoring 2.6 (18) and Swan Districts an inaccurate 1.12 (18).
