WAFL | BULLDOGS GO DOWN TO PEEL

It was the battle of the last two WAFL premiership winners and a big finish wasn’t quite enough for South Fremantle in Mandurah on Saturday with Peel Thunder scoring the 18-point victory.

The WAFL season resumed on Saturday at Lane Group Stadium following last Saturday’s State game triumph with the Bulldogs heading down to Mandurah with the reigning premiers taking on the premiership team of 2024.

Peel managed to start the better and were leading by 16 points at quarter-time, by 28 at half-time and 41 at three quarter-time.
South Fremantle did manage the last four goals of the game but it wasn’t quite enough with the Thunder holding on for the 13.10 (88) to 10.10 (70) victory.

Brandon Donaldson and Sam Otto ended up kicking two goals apiece on the day for the Bulldogs.

Jake Florenca racked up another 26 possessions while Isiah Winder finished with 20 disposals, Chad Pearson 19, Jamaine Jones 18, Aaron Drage 18, Tom Blechynden 17, Ashton Ferriera 15, Lewis Rayson 15 and Lucas Robinson 15.

Matthew Parker also made his return and finished with 11 possessions, four tackles and four entries inside the forward 50.

Peel made a flying start to the game with four goals inside the first nine minutes to already be leading by 25 points before South Fremantle got on the board at the 16-minute mark with Sam Otto kicking truly.

He added another less than two minutes later and Brandon Donaldson also added another before quarter-time but it was still the Thunder leading by 16 points at the first break.

The Thunder also managed the first three goals of the second quarter before a steadier for South Fremantle from Jordan Boullineau. Ashton Ferreira added another just before half-time with the Thunder going into the break leading by 28 points.

Once again it was the Thunder kicking the first two goals of the third quarter before Chase Bourne kicked truly for the Bulldogs, but it was still Peel leading by 41 points at three quarter-time.

South Fremantle did manage the only four goals of the last term through Cooper Clarke-Dehring, Isiah Winder, Donaldson and Toby Dodds but they still fell 18 points short in the finish.

The Colts match up took place on Friday night in Mandurah with South Fremantle holding out Peel Thunder for the 10.9 (69) to 8.5 (53) victory.

South Fremantle kicked the only three goals of the first quarter and then managed six to one in the second on the way to the 50-point advantage by half-time.

Even then by only kicking one goal in the second half and the Thunder managing seven, South Fremantle held out Peel for the 16-point victory to improve to a perfect 6-0 record to start the Colts season.

Jye Hunt ended up with three goals for the Bulldogs while Jasper Smith, Ayrton Howard and Cooper Matera all kicked two apiece.

Chace Vanderhoek gathered 30 possessions, Zac Godwin 19, Riley Stannard 19, Jack McAuliffe 18, Coby Douglas 16 and Dylan Noble 14.

The Reserves match up then took place at Lane Group Stadium following the League game on Saturday with South Fremantle holding on for the thrilling 11.9 (75) to 10.11 (71) victory against Peel Thunder.

The Bulldogs kicked the only two goals of the first quarter and then with five to four in the second term they went into the half-time break leading by 21 points.

South Fremantle then kicked three goals to two in the third quarter to be up by 25 points at three quarter-time before the Bulldogs kicked the first goal of the last term and then held on for the four-point win despite Peel kicking the game’s last four goals.

Jack Green kicked three goals for South Fremantle with Hudson Pivac and Bailey Harbour adding two each.

Jacob Donald picked up 21 possessions, Cohen Frith 20, Millar Rank 16, Tarkyn Etherington 15, Louis Poulson 15 and Lachlan Princi 14.
