WAFLW | Bulldogs draw with Demons

Madi Hadley was so close to being the hero for South Fremantle before Perth kicked the last gasp goal for the WAFLW draw at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday evening.

The WAFLW fixture was played following the men’s WAFL game on Saturday and the Bulldogs were attempting to get a second win of the season and to hit back from the Good Friday loss to Swan Districts, and to also get one back for losing to Perth last year at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

And for most of the contest the Bulldogs were on track to get the win including being nine points up early in the fourth quarter and by six again when Hadley kicked a late goal.

However, Amy Trindade kicked the goal just before the siren for Perth that saw both teams finish on 8.7 (55) for the draw.

Shannyn Pomersbach ended up kicking three goals for South Fremantle to go with seven kicks and three marks while Madi Hadley and Makaela Tuhakaraina also kicked two goals apiece.

Tash Entwistle racked up 23 possessions for the Bulldogs to go with eight tackles, seven marks and five inside-50 entries.

Brianna Cleggett also had 19 disposals, Mikayla Hyde 19, Hadley 14, Ash Gomes 14, Ebony Grant 12, Tara Stribley 11, Annalie Polimeno 11, Madi Evans 10 and captain Hunter Cronin 10.

The Bulldogs were looking to hit back from their Good Friday loss and also having lost to Perth at home last year, and they started well with the first goal of the game in less than five minutes thanks to Makaela Tuhakaraina.

Jasmine Bazeley then added another for South Fremantle to be up by 14 points and then still by eight at quarter-time following a late goal from Perth.

Former Bulldog Poppy Stockwell kicked a goal for the Demons to start the second quarter before they kicked another to grab the lead only for South Fremantle to respond with goals to Shannyn Pomersbach and Tuhakaraina.

Pomersbach also added a second of the half just before the break and that saw the Bulldogs head into the half-time interval leading by seven points.

South Fremantle then pushed out to a 13-point lead to start the third quarter with a goal to Madi Hadley before Perth responded with the other two goals of the term and by three quarter-time the Bulldogs were clinging to the three-point edge.

Pomersbach kicked a third goal to open the fourth quarter and South Fremantle were again leading by nine points before Perth kicked the next two goals including another to Stockwell.

The Bulldogs got back in front by six points with a second goal to Hadley at the 18-minute mark but then just as the siren was about to sound, Amy Trindade kicked the goal for the Demons that secured the draw.

The action on Saturday morning at Fremantle Community Bank Oval got underway with the Rogers Cup match up and it was Perth who ended up prevailing 11.6 (72) to 3.1 (19) against South Fremantle.

The Demons kicked the only three goals of the first quarter and then another four to one in the second to go into the half-time break leading the Bulldogs by 38 points.

South Fremantle did manage two goals in the third term but then none in the last with Perth going on to secure the 53-point victory.

The goals from the Bulldogs were kicked by Khesan Starr, Gracie-Lee Briggs and Mackenzie Chapple with Zoe Antonelli, Alice Warburton, Niamh Sherry and Katy Elliott among the other strong contributors.
