WAFLW | BULLDOGS FALL 1-POINT SHORT
South Fremantle finished strongly but couldn’t quite get that one more goal needed to go down by a solitary point on Friday night in the WAFLW derby to open the WA Day long weekend.
The derby took place back on Friday night at The Good Grocer Park with the Bulldogs looking to replicate their performance against the Sharks to open the 2026 WAFLW season.
South Fremantle did end up managing just the one goal in the first half and two goals to three quarter-time before falling 14 points down early in the last quarter.
But the Bulldogs did kick the last two goals of the game and had some more chances but it was East Fremantle who ended up holding on for the 5.3 (33) to 4.8 (32) victory.
The result leaves South Fremantle in seventh position on the WAFLW ladder with three wins, four losses and a draw after nine rounds.
Annalie Polimeno kicked two last quarter goals for the Bulldogs with Shannyn Pomersbach and Jasmine Bazeley the other goal scorers.
Tash Entwistle amassed another 24 possessions for South Fremantle, Madi Evans 22, Tahleah Mulder 21 (11 tackles), Makaela Tuhakaraina 15, Hunter Cronin 14 and Kelli Elliss 13.
The game got underway on Friday night with a strong start from South Fremantle with the first goal inside the first four minutes from Shannyn Pomersbach.
East Fremantle answered shortly before quarter-time but it was the Bulldogs leading by two points by the first break.
South Fremantle were scoreless in the second quarter and that meant the Sharks went into the half-time break with the 12-point advantage.
It was then a goal apiece in the third quarter with the goal for the Bulldogs coming from Jasmine Bazeley before East Fremantle kicked the first goal of the last term to go up by 14 points.
South Fremantle hit back with goals to Annalie Polimeno to suddenly be within two points before having a couple of chances before the siren, but it wasn’t quite to be and the Sharks held on for the one-point win to start the WA Day long weekend.
The Rogers Cup contest got things underway on Friday evening at The Good Grocer Park with East Fremantle ending up beating South Fremantle 6.11 (47) to 5.9 (39).
East Fremantle kicked the only two goals of the first quarter and then the only three of the second to go into half-time leading by 33 points.
South Fremantle did hit back with the only two goals of the third quarter and then three to one in the last, but just fell eight points short of the comeback to now sit on a 2-6 record for the season in the Rogers Cup.
Ayvah Rioli and Maningning Morales both kicked two goals apiece for South Fremantle with the other goal courtesy of Makenzie Chapple.
