Colts Report - Round 22

Thursday, August 28, 2014 - 10:19 AM - by Arthur Maskos

WITH one round Qleft in the season, the South Fremantle's colts team heads into preparation for its fourth finals campaign in succession. This week they take on cellar dwellers Peel with some great form after laying to rest Subiaco’s last chance at playing in September last Saturday.

It was possibly the best performance by the colts side for 2014 on Saturday as they displayed some terrific team football. The game was just the tonic as we head toward the finals with renewed confidence.

The first quarter saw both sides exchange goals and some willingness to put the body on the line for the contested ball. Jacob Dragovich led the way with seven tackles and 29 disposals for the game.

Bulldogs beat Lions on Friday night to make it four straight

Saturday, August 23, 2014 - 2:30 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle continued its strong finish to the 2014 WAFL season having now won four straight matches with three wins over top-four teams in that period after the Bulldogs beat Subiaco by 14 points at Fremantle Oval on Friday night.

South Fremantle might not be a chance of playing finals in 2014 having won just 10 of its opening 13 matches of the season, but the Bulldogs after finishing Paul Hasleby's time as coach with plenty of momentum to give the incoming Todd Curley plenty to work with.

The Bulldogs kicked the only four goals of the first quarter on Friday night at Fremantle Oval and led by 29 points on two separate occasions during the match, and then responded to being challenged by the second-placed Subiaco to win 14.15 (99) to 12.13 (85).

Round 22 Preview v Subiaco

Friday, August 22, 2014 - 1:43 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle looks to continue its winning streak this Friday night against Subiaco at Fremantle Oval with the Bulldogs looking to beat a finals bound opponent for the third time in a month.

South Fremantle might not be in the running to play finals in 2014, but the Bulldogs have now won three straight matches and even more impressively is the fact that two of those have come against the fourth-placed East Fremantle and third-placed Swan Districts.

That means that the Bulldogs enter Friday night's clash with the second-placed Subiaco full of confidence, but the Lions are guaranteed of a top-two finish this season and will be desperate to return to the winner's list ahead of the finals.

Pickett makes immediate mark at league level for Bulldogs

Thursday, August 21, 2014 - 5:05 PM - by Chris Pike

JARROD Pickett has made an immediate impact in his first three WAFL league matches with South Fremantle and that has only helped the recently-turned 18-year-old continue his charge to being a top AFL draft pick later this year.

While still 17 years of age, Pickett made his league debut with the Bulldogs in the Round 19 win in the derby over East Fremantle at East Fremantle Oval during which he kicked a goal with his first kick and booted two majors for the day.

He then had a quiet game for most of the day the next week against Peel Thunder at Fremantle Oval before turning on a simply stunning performance in the final 10 minutes of the game.

South Fremantle appoints Todd Curley as senior coach

Wednesday, August 20, 2014 - 3:56 PM - by Chris Pike

THE South Fremantle Football Club wishes to announce the appointment of Todd Curley as the new senior coach of our club for at least the next two WAFL seasons.

The South Fremantle Football Club and current senior coach Paul Hasleby both decided that he would not be seeking a renewal of his contract once the 2014 season expires and that opened the door for the Bulldogs to search for the best candidates to fill the chair for 2015 and beyond.

After an extensive nation-wide search and with the coaching selection panel headed up by South Fremantle great and West Coast Eagles premiership captain and coach John Worsfold, and dual South Fremantle premiership player and premiership captain David Gault, Curley was appointed to lead the Bulldogs back to glory and to finals for the first time since 2011.

Bulldogs win third straight, break losing run v Swans

Monday, August 18, 2014 - 12:20 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle is again finishing a season in tremendous form having now won three straight matches following Saturday's dominant 46-point victory over the finals bound Swan Districts at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval.

The 2014 season has followed the same trend that the 2012 and 2013 campaigns with Paul Hasleby as coach have taken with the Bulldogs getting off to a slow start to fall out of finals contention, but then finding strong form late in the year to build some momentum looking towards the next season.

South Fremantle lost its first four games of the season, found form winning three straight and then saw its finals chances well and truly buried with a six-game losing run between rounds 9 and 15.

However, since the Round 15 loss to Claremont, South Fremantle has been terrific having beaten Perth by 12 points, losing to Subiaco narrowly by nine points, beating East Fremantle by 43 points, beating Peel by one-point and now defeating Swan Districts 18.7 (115) to 9.15 (69).

Round 21 Preview v Swan Districts

Friday, August 15, 2014 - 11:48 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle is out for revenge for a disappointing loss this season for the second straight week while also shooting for a third consecutive victory this Saturday up against the third-placed Swan Districts at Bassendean's Steel Blue Oval.

Swan Districts is guaranteed of playing finals football in 2014 and is still most likely to finish third, but the black-and-whites haven’t been impressive for some time now and Saturday against South Fremantle at Steel Blue Oval would be the ideal time to regain some strong form.

Swans went on a stunning eight-game winning streak between Rounds 3 and 10 this season, and then had their season set up for them by Round 15 when sitting on an 11-3 record, but the form of the black-and-whites has been slipping over the past two months.

Red and WHITE – Craig White Column Round 20

Thursday, August 14, 2014 - 4:18 PM - by Craig White

FOR this week's column I was asked to pick my best South Fremantle team that I've played with and considering there have been so many great players and 36 premiership players trying to get them down to 22 was really tough.

There is a group of more than 30 made up of blokes who have played forward and back, midfield and forward, midfield and back so it's hard to get the right combination. But essentially I tried to pick blokes where they played their best footy in my time.

This exercise gave me the chance to look back on my career as well and I wouldn’t be in the top 30 players so that means that I have learned from 30 or 40 better players than myself. The grounding that I got when I first came up from the colts and learning from those senior guys held me in good stead, and gave the leadership qualities that I needed to make sure that I was still in the team going forward. And then coming forward with the Hams boys, Cooky and seeing how far Duff has gone on now, it just shows that we did have a strong group then and there's not too many from today's team in my side, but I can see in three or four years time that the colts group coming through could have the same success that we had.

Teen Pickett inspires remarkable Bulldogs' win

Monday, August 11, 2014 - 8:20 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle turned the tables on losing from winning positions by coming from behind to win in stunning fashion over Peel Thunder on Saturday at Fremantle Oval thanks to mercurial 17-year-old Jarrod Pickett.

South Fremantle was coming off a terrific 43-point derby win over East Fremantle the week before while Peel also had winning form coming into the contest at Fremantle Oval after a thumping win over Perth the previous Saturday at Lathlain Park.

It was Peel who had opened up an 11-point advantage over South Fremantle by quarter-time with that stretching to as much as 28 points during the second quarter.
