Magical Pickett delivers on biggest stage of all

Sunday, September 29, 2019 - 10:03 PM - by Chris Pike

TEN months ago he was again overlooked by every AFL club. Four months ago his WAFL season might have been over let alone any AFL dream. But now Marlion Pickett is not only an AFL premiership player with Richmond but went ever so close to a Norm Smith Medal on debut.

From the moment Pickett arrived at South Fremantle midway through the 2013 season as a 21-year-old it didn’t take long for it to soon become obvious he was a special talent.

He would play just six reserves games before then coach Paul Hasleby couldn’t ignore him any further and threw him in for the last two league games of the WAFL season.

Grand Final to forget for Bulldogs

Monday, September 23, 2019 - 12:40 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle had done a tremendous job to reach the 2019 WAFL Grand Final but it didn’t turn out how the Bulldogs hoped with Subiaco asserting its dominance with a 96-point victory.

It was a richly deserved Grand Final appearance for South Fremantle after four successive second place finishes at the end of the home and away season.

After losing the past three preliminary finals to Peel Thunder in 2016, Subiaco in 2017 and West Perth in 2018, South Fremantle broke through to beat Claremont in the 2019 preliminary final at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

First Grand Final a deserved reward for Bewick

Saturday, September 21, 2019 - 6:06 PM - by Chris Pike

THERE are precious few fairytales in football and getting what you deserve doesn’t really exist, but reward for your dedication and perseverance can eventuate and it's hard to imagine a more deserving player to reach a first Grand Final this Sunday than Shaun Bewick.

Bewick will play his 154th WAFL game on Sunday and it will be the first Grand Final of a career that started back at West Perth where he and twin brother Rohan began to continue the rich family history with the Falcons firstly in the colts before he graduated to league level by 2009.

The finals heartbreak began there for Bewick with a first semi-final loss to Swan Districts and then a preliminary final loss to Subiaco in 2011 before he felt he needed a change and if he didn’t find another WAFL home, he'd likely move on altogether.

Coach Post Match – Todd Curley Preliminary Final

Thursday, September 19, 2019 - 8:48 PM - by Chris Pike

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the Preliminary Final triumph against Claremont that saw the Bulldogs advance to this Sunday's WAFL Grand Final against Subiaco at Optus Stadium.

QUESTION: You've waited a long time to get a Grand Final now, what's the feeling like to now be there?
ANSWER:
It's funny, it's a feeling of excitement of opportunity more than anything. We'll recover over the next couple of days and then do what we always do. We'll review and then train to get better and now only two teams can win it, and we're one of them.

Bulldogs advance to first Grand Final in a decade

Tuesday, September 17, 2019 - 12:25 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle delivered a strong preliminary final on its fourth straight attempt on Sunday afternoon to beat Claremont by 30 points at Fremantle Community Bank Oval to advance to the 2019 Grand Final.

The memories of the previous three preliminary final defeats for South Fremantle was something that was difficult to ignore as they played on the same day again for a fourth successive year, but the Bulldogs were more than up to the occasion this time around.

The first three quarters of the game saw the team kicking to the Fremantle Hospital end of the ground dominating the game. South Fremantle kicked the only three goals of the first quarter and then Claremont kicked the only three of the second term to lead narrowly at half-time.
