Coach Post Match – Todd Curley Second Semi-Final

Thursday, September 12, 2019 - 3:53 PM - by Chris Pike

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the WAFL second semi-final defeat at the hands of Subiaco and now looking ahead to Sunday's preliminary final against Claremont at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

QUESTION: As you found out, Subiaco only needs to dominate for a short period to blow you away?
ANSWER:
I thought they were only better than us really for one quarter to be honest. But they were probably better than us and a lot harder than us for most of the game. We never really got going and then a bit of ill-discipline and frustration bubbled over and they make you pay. But you earn a second chance and we'll have a look at it, work out the bits we need to get better in and train for it during the week.

Q: What did you make of the first half, neither team played that well and couldn’t put a score on board. Were you reasonably happy at half-time?
A:
I think if you look at it at half-time it was four goals each and it was a bit of an arm-wrestle. Even halfway through the third quarter there was still only a goal the difference, and we had a lot of guys who were down. We thought there was a lot more growth left in us but we just lost our way and our focus a bit, and they hurt us on the scoreboard pretty quickly.

Five Bulldogs named to WAFL Team of the Year

Wednesday, September 11, 2019 - 11:12 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle has had another tremendous 2019 season and that has resulted in Chad Pearson, Haiden Schloithe, Mason Shaw, Jacob Dragovich and Brock Higgins all named in the final 25 players selected as part of the WAFL Team of the Year.

The Team of the Year was selected based on positions players earned during the Team of the Week named after each round of the 2019 season, and the Bulldogs representatives highlight another standout season that saw South Fremantle finish the home and away season in second position.

Five of the final 25 players selected came from South Fremantle with Brock Higgins named in the ruck, Mason Shaw at full-forward, Haiden Schloithe to a half-forward flank, Chad Pearson on the interchange and Jacob Dragovich as an emergency.

Bulldogs blown away in third quarter burst by Lions

Monday, September 9, 2019 - 11:04 AM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle did a lot right in Sunday's WAFL preliminary final against Subiaco at Leederville Oval and for three quarters more than held their own, but all the Lions needed was a 12-minute patch in the third quarter to blow the game wide open.

South Fremantle was playing in its fourth consecutive second semi-final and for the third time in those four, Subiaco was the opponent with the Bulldogs returning to Leederville Oval where they had defeated the Lions back in Round 6 of this season.

Then despite Subiaco kicking the first two goals of the game, South Fremantle steadied into the contest nicely with scores locked up at quarter-time and the Lions led by just four points at half-time.

Proud Maskos books name on No. 33 locker

Saturday, September 7, 2019 - 8:07 PM - by Chris Pike

It's hard to imagine South Fremantle being so strong for four straight years without his presence down back and now Jason Maskos celebrates 100 games with the Bulldogs in Sunday's second semi-final.

There's no question within the inner sanctum of the Bulldogs that he is ranked as highly in terms of importance as anyone and would just about be the first picked every week for the consistently high-standard he sets defensively.

Second Semi-Final Preview v Subiaco

Saturday, September 7, 2019 - 7:32 PM - by Chris Pike

SOUTH Fremantle has already beaten Subiaco at Leederville Oval in 2019 and if they can do so again on Sunday afternoon, the Bulldogs will be in the WAFL Grand Final for the first time since 2009.

The Bulldogs played in their fourth successive qualifying final last Saturday and beat Claremont by seven points to now book a spot in their third second semi-final of the past four years

They have lost the previous two second semi-final match ups against Subiaco in 2016 and 2018, but now it could be fourth time lucky on Sunday and if it is, the Bulldogs are straight into the Grand Final at Optus Stadium on Sunday September 22.

It's a remarkable feat by both Subiaco and South Fremantle that as they prepare to do battle in Sunday second semi-final that for a fourth consecutive year, they have finished first and second on the ladder.

Coach Post Match – Todd Curley Qualifying Final

Saturday, September 7, 2019 - 11:08 AM - by Chris Pike

WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the WAFL qualifying final victory over Claremont and now looking ahead to the second semi-final this Sunday against Subiaco at Leederville Oval with a Grand Final spot at stake.

QUESTION: Even though it got a bit tight in the end, you'd have to be happy with that?
ANSWER:
We certainly played some good footy at times. Then late, they probably didn’t have a lot to lose and they were rolling the dice a bit and a couple of things came off. We made a couple of poor errors late which gave them some score, but I thought we hung in there with a really young group. They'll learn a lot from the game and we are pleased to move on.

Q: Does the last 10 minutes take any shine off the win?
A:
We're really happy. I don’t know how many goals they kicked last week, I think it was 23, so we kept them to nine and we are really happy with that. We missed a few chances but maybe they did as well but in finals it really doesn’t matter how much you win by, you just have to win. We have a lot of young guys that certainly would have learnt a lot and Dent didn’t play and will be close next week, and the same with Zac Strom. They are pretty important to us and if they're ready, we'd love to have them back.
