DARWIN DOCO LAUNCHES

Author: South Fremantle Football Club

In late January 2023, the South Fremantle Football Club Men’s WAFL side travelled via invitation to Darwin to contest the AFLNT combined (NTFL) side during their annual rep weekend.

The trip was a fantastic participant experience and showcase of WAFL football in another State/Territory, seeing South Fremantle contest the very best in the Top End, unfortunately coming out second best but with magical memories.

There was a range of cultural and educational activities throughout the weekend including an incredible Welcome to Country and saltwater ceremony. During a formal ceremony in front of players, Board, and Souths people, we were lucky enough to present and congratulate our joint Ball Legends for 2023, Benny Vigona and Basil Campbell.

South Fremantle Football Club has a strong and enduring connection with the NT, and it was 50 years ago that Sibby Rioli travelled to Fremantle Oval to play for us in 1972. From this trailblazing moment, we have welcomed dozens of Territory footballers to our Club, truly enriched by their skill, courage and outstanding character.

This trip was far more than just a game of football. It was about connecting with a community that means a great deal to our club, honouring the history and legacy between the NT and South Fremantle. We were grateful for the opportunity to travel to Darwin to play against the best in the NTFL, and we look forward to coming back a lot sooner than 25 years.
