WAFL | BULLDOGS KEEP ON WINNING

For the second straight week South Fremantle produced a strong WAFL finish and this time the Bulldogs kicked the only four goals of the last quarter to come from behind to beat Swan Districts by 11 points.

South Fremantle were back home at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday having won their past two matches as had Swan Districts setting up a fascinating Round 15 contest.

Swan Districts managed to hold a 10-point lead by the end of the first quarter while still leading by 15 points at half-time and 13 at three quarter-time but then the Bulldogs took over.

South Fremantle kicked the only four goals of the final term to end up winning 7.10 (52) to 5.11 (41) to improve to a 9-5 record by the end of Round 15 and to sit in third position on the WAFL ladder.

Roan O’Hehir kicked two goals from his three kicks on the day for South Fremantle to be the team’s only multiple goal scorer.

Jake Florenca racked up 29 possessions, Tom Blechynden 26, Chad Pearson 23, Isiah Winder 22, Lewis Rayson 19 and Glenn Byron 19 in the 100th game of his WAFL career.

Then there was ruckman Hamish Free who produced a dominant performance ending up with 23 possessions and 42 hit outs.

Swan Districts came into the game at Fremantle Community Bank Oval having won their past two games and then kicked the opening two goals of the contest as well before South Fremantle responded through Cooper Clarke-Dehring.

That cut the Swans lead back to 10 points at quarter-time before the visitors did also manage the first goal of the second quarter only for Ed Graham to respond for South Fremantle.

Aaron Drage also added another goal before half-time but by the main break it was still the Swans holding on to the 15-point lead.

Neither team then managed to kick a goal in the third quarter with South Fremantle kicking six behinds and the Swans four which saw the Bulldogs still behind by 13 points heading into three quarter-time.

It took more than 12 minutes also for a goal to be kicked in the last quarter but that went the way of South Fremantle from Roan O’Hehir.

Isiah Winder, Jake Florenca and O’Hehir again then also kicked goals over the course of six minutes which saw South Fremantle manage the only four goals of the final term to turn it into the 11-point victory to move up into third position by the end of Round 15.

It was the Colts game that started the day’s action on Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with South Fremantle scoring the thumping 15.16 (106) to 4.7 (31) victory against Swan Districts.

South Fremantle kicked two goals to one in the first quarter to already be leading by seven points at the first change before kicking the only four goals of the second term to be in control by 32 points at half-time.

South Fremantle pulled away further with five goals to two in the third term and then four goals to one in the final quarter to go on to score the 75-point victory.

The win keeps South Fremantle clear in top spot of the Colts with an 11-2 record to be clear of both East Fremantle and Claremont who sit at 9-3.

Cameron Maynard kicked three goals in the win for the Bulldogs along with two each to Kobe Clucas, Chace Vanderhoek and Sam Hookham.

Vanderhoek also racked up 29 possessions, Riley Stannard 22, Jack McAuliffe 22, Xavier Allen 21, Byron Foster 10, Heath Wilson 19 and Zac Godwin 18.

That led into the Reserves match up and it wasn’t quite to be for South Fremantle with Swan Districts scoring the 14.19 (103) to 10.11 (71) victory.

Swan Districts made a dominant start with 14 scoring shots to two in the first quarter for four goals to one to be leading by 27 points at quarter-time.

It was then five goals to three in the second quarter from the Swans to go into half-time leading by 40 points.

South Fremantle had the best of the third quarter with three goals to one before Swans responded with four goals to three in the last term for the Bulldogs to come up short by 32 points.

Mitch Geier ended up kicking three goals for South Fremantle’s Reserves and Jarrah Hayden with Jack Green picking up 21 possessions, Jacob Donald 21, Taj Longmuir 19, Zane Triscari 18 and Nick Stuhldreier 16.
