ROUND 1 WAFLW PREVIEW V SUBIACO
POPULAR COUPLE THRIVING ON LIFE WITH BULLDOGS
The day in Mandurah for South Fremantle gets underway with the Rogers Cup contest against Peel Thunder with the Bulldogs looking to bounce back from a loss last week to Claremont.
On the back of winning the premiership last year in the Rogers Cup competition, South Fremantle's Youth Girls started the premiership defence in 2021 with a thumping 77-point win against Subiaco at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
They backed it up with an even more emphatic 104-point win against East Perth in Round 2 at Leederville Oval before going down to Claremont by 14 points last Sunday.
The Youth Girls will now look to return to the winner's list on Sunday against Peel with just the one change and that's Pip Sideris coming back into the team for the Bulldogs.
Next up will be South Fremantle's Reserves taking on Peel Thunder with the Bulldogs starting the season off on a winning note beating Subiaco by 23 points at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
The Reserves then had the bye in Round 2 before falling to Claremont on the road last Sunday by 22 points. So now the Bulldogs will be attempting to get their second win of the season on Sunday against Peel.
There are plenty of changes for South Fremantle's Reserves team too with Makayla Cocking, Hannah Felton, Lara Rodin-Zimdahl, Kim Theiss, Maya Tyrrell and Ella Ward all coming back into the line-up.
Mikaila Kowald, Georgia Kowald, Nakita Little, Tahlia McRoberts, Reanne Pickett, Shakira Pickett, Emma Steinemann and Tash Vaughan-Taylor all go out.
Round 4 in the WAFLW competition then continues on Sunday with the premiers of last year hosting the wooden spooners at Mandurah's David Grays Arena when Peel Thunder takes on South Fremantle.
Peel pulled off the remarkable fairytale to win last year's premiership and then began this 2021 season in fine form with a 32-point victory at home against East Fremantle and then hitting the road to beat Subiaco by 44 points in a Grand Final rematch.
That undefeated streak came to an end, though, last Saturday evening on their home turf against Swan Districts with Peel going down to the tune of 28 points.
South Fremantle, meanwhile, was a late arrival into the WAFLW competition last year but the Bulldogs put in a spirited Round 1 performance this year to fall just three points shy against Subiaco of what would have been their first ever victory.
South Fremantle hasn’t quite been able to get as close since with 53-point loss to Swan Districts in Round 2 and then a 51-point defeat at the hands of Claremont last Sunday.
Now South Fremantle remains on the road on Sunday for the trip to Mandurah as they try and win their first ever game in the WAFLW competition but it's a big ask against the reigning premiers now determined to bounce back from their first defeat of 2021.
Georgia Kowald, Nakita Little and Tahlia McRoberts are into the team for South Fremantle while Emily Boothman, Makayla Cocking and Ella Ward go out.
