PREMIERSHIP COACH INKS TWO YEAR EXTENSION
THE South Fremantle Football Club is pleased to announce the two-year extension of Todd Curley, securing the premiership coach until the end of the 2023 WAFL season.
Curley is in his seventh season at the Kennel, having arrived at the beginning of 2015 and has coached the Bulldogs in 136 games to date. That comes on the back of him beginning his senior coaching career at West Perth between 2006-08 where he took the Falcons to a preliminary final ahead of a stint as an assistant coach in the AFL at the Fremantle Dockers.
All that came on the back of a glittering playing career in the AFL and the WAFL for Curley, who played 118 matches between the Western Bulldogs and Collingwood, and another 148 with West Perth including winning premierships in 1995 and 2003.
That saw Curley bring quite the pedigree into taking on the role at South Fremantle and his tenure has seen the Bulldogs participate in deep finals campaigns over the past five years, including reaching three preliminary finals, a Grand Final and culminating in winning the 2020 premiership at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
South Fremantle CEO Cameron Britt said the club was delighted to extend Curley’s contract ahead of the 2021 Finals Series.
“Todd has helped our football club to deliver the ultimate success and we’re excited to continue the journey with him over the next two seasons,” Britt said.
“The club continues to move forward with record highs in membership and commercial activities, in considerable part due to Todd’s success with our WAFL Men’s team.
“His commitment and drive, coupled with his renowned experience and leadership, are incredible assets for Souths as we seek further success on this shared journey ahead.
“Todd continues to look for ways to improve himself and get the best out of his players and coaching group. We look excitedly ahead to another finals series in the coming weeks.”
Following a review of the club’s football strategy and a future needs appraisal, Curley’s role will be expanded, with an ‘all of club’ focus upon our Female, Talent and Community activities.
“I’m incredibly honoured to continue coaching the South Fremantle Football Club, the Premier Family Club”, Curley said.
“It’s been a wonderful seven years at the Bulldogs and I’m thrilled to be able to continue the journey into the future.
“The relationships that exist between our football staff, players, administration, sponsors and members, reflects a genuine alignment across all areas of the club.
“We want to continue to have sustained success and that is a challenge that myself, the coaching staff and all our players are ready for.
“I reserve a special thank you for my loving and supportive wife Paula, and children Thalia and Aiden, for their encouragement in allowing me to pursue a passion and role that I love."
In his seven WAFL seasons, Curley is about to lead the Bulldogs to a sixth consecutive finals appearance, including the famous premiership win last year.
The 48-year-old has a win-loss percentage of 66 per cent winning 90 of a possible 136 games and upon completion of this contract extension, will equal the tenure as the longest-serving coach in South Fremantle history, alongside Hall of Fame Legend Clive Lewington.
