2023 GASCOYNE ROADSHOW
Players from South Fremantle Football Club recently had the privilege of traveling with the Stephen Michael Foundation to Gascoyne to run programs in schools and at local training sessions.
The Stephen Michael Foundation took Jimmy Miller (Exmouth), Noah Strom (Exmouth) and Glenn Byron (Carnarvon), as they all grew up and went to school in the region.
Getting the chance to visit their home towns, and give back to the communities they hold so close to their hearts was an amazing experience.
The group managed to fit in so much across the 3 days, visiting 3 different schools, two football clubs and meeting over 500 kids!
Day #1: The players began the trip by flying to Carnarvon from Perth where they were greeted with open arms by Tessa and Seth from the Stephen Michael Foundation. Night one saw the boys immerse themselves in local junior football training with kids of all ages getting a chance to train and learn from WAFL Players.
Day #2: Started bright and early at St Mary Star of the Sea College in Carnarvon where the players ran 2 clinics with the Senior School (Yr 5,6,7,8,9 & 10) and one with the Junior School (Yr 2,3 & 4). Once the boys were finished signing posters and giveaways, it was straight off to Carnarvon Community College for two clinics before driving from Carnarvon to Exmouth.
Day #3: The last day of clinics was spent at Exmouth District High School teaching kids aged Year 4 to Year 7! All the kids got something out of the session and had the chance to ask questions at the end of each class.
The players then went down to Junior Football Night at Exmouth Football Club, helping coach and umpire the Auskick, Junior, and Colts kids. Jimmy and Glenn took up umpiring for the evening, while Noah shared his knowledge with the kids from the assistant coach's seat.
Day #4: Glenn drove back to Carnarvon to spend the day with Carnarvon Ramblers, who were celebrating a Past Players Day, of which Glenn is one.
Overall it was an incredible trip visiting our Northern Country Zone. The kids all got so much out of the visits and could be seen showing off their footballs, posters, and various giveaways.
Huge thank you to The Stephen Michael Foundation for organising such an amazing trip for our players.
We look forward to venturing back into our Country Zones more often in the future.
