Colts Report Round 2

Wednesday, April 2, 2014 - 5:45 PM by Arthur Maskos

This Colts season has started in promising fashion as the South Fremantle youngsters have shown good early form to record two wins in as many weeks. After overrunning a valiant Subiaco side in week 1 the colts easily accounted for a  young Perth colts team on Saturday.

Lead by recently appointed Captain Brad McPhail the players were able to assert their superior strength and skill to force Perth onto the back foot early, from which they found it very difficult to recover. It was pleasing to see players like Bill Collier, Noah Strom and Jack McMaster continue their  good preseason form in the backline. They were ably assisted by the dominant tall brigade in Bill Frampton, Cameron Loersch and Matthew Ah Siu.

The Southerners midfield were dominant all day, none more so than Joel McComb (MCAS Air-conditioning award winner) on a wing. His form was consistent all day and  along with his fellow midfielders gave the forwards many opportunities to kick a winning score. Sharing the goal scoring duties among eleven players is pleasing to the coaching group as we search for an even effort from all contributors in the forward line. Jesse Mirco gave a top class performance in only his second game for the club and looks likely to make mark in the forward line in 2014. Others to play well on the day were Bailey Matera, Jarrod Pickett and Jacob Dragovich.

This week the colts program is stretch to its limits as we see no less than nine players leave us for national and international duties. Brad McPhail and Jacob Dragovich are the newest  South Fremantle additions to the state 18’s squad and join Bill Frampton, Jarrod Garlett, Kade Stewart, Callum Ah Chee, Jarrod Pickett, Jermaine Miller-Lewis, and Matthew Ah Siu for the 2014 WA state academy program. Ah Siu, Pickett and Miller-Lewis will also be on national duties representing Australia on the  Institute of Sport overseas trip to Europe.

The Colts squad and all its support staff would also like to thank  Daniel Vidovich for his efforts over the last few years. Vido has been a great contributor to the rise of the Colts program at the SFFC and will be truly missed. The extra incentive was delivered just prior to the players entering the arena when Daniel gave an emotional good bye. We wish Vido all the best in his new career and his pending role of fatherhood.

Thank you to all the support group at the SFFC colts program and wish all an enjoyable season.
