Colts Report - Round 4

Tuesday, April 15, 2014 - 12:54 PM by Arthur Maskos

THIS week saw the South Fremantle colts side go down for the first time in 2014 against Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.

The determined Swans outfit played consistently well and now stand as the only undefeated side in the colts competition for 2014.
With many new faces making their debut in the red and white, the South boys found it difficult to maintain the necessary pressure on the resurgent Swans outfit.
The debutants found it hard going in a fast and hectic start to the game. After finding their feet, the South boys were able to regain some ground before the quarter time break.
Bailey Matera and Bill Collier were able to show some leadership through the midfield to keep the Bulldogs in the contest.
Skill errors and lack of adherence to the game plan cost the group opportunities to be competitive early.
With few contributors helping, Bailey along with Bill, Luke Pearson and Jack McMaster, we were able to keep the previously undefeated Bulldogs within striking distance at half-time.
In the third term the Bulldogs were able to show the fighting character that we have been renowned for over the last few seasons.
Braden Fimmano gave some drive from the back line which gave players such as Grant McLeod and Joel McComb opportunities to run the ball deep into the forward half.
Corey Salmon won the hard ball in the contests giving Collier and Matera a hand to bring the side back into the game, from where we were able to wrestle back the lead.
Some undisciplined acts late in the third term cost the team two Swans goals which gave the opposition the lead and some ascendancy going into the last. From here it was all one way traffic as the Swans unit took the game away from South and also top position on the ladder.
Congratulations to Lachlan Clarke, Bobby Zico, Matthew Grubelich, Brandon Colbung, Jamie Foster and Jake Florenca on making their debut with the Souths colts side.
Jamie and Brandon have waited a while for their opportunity and it was good to see them get their chance. It was also pleasing to see the next generation of the Bottrell family come through the club.
Young Jake Florenca is the grandson of the late Tom Bottrell Snr and the nephew of past great Tom Jnr. Jake was lucky enough to pick up a few hints from his uncle on the morning drive to Bassendean where Tom is the current chief executive.
This week we take on West Perth up at Arena Joondalup.
We regain some of our state representatives and look forward to redeeming last week’s loss.
A much improved defensive effort and the desire to win the contest will be our focus against the Falcons.
Hopefully we get to see as many supporters as possible get to Joondalup and support all three grades this week.
