Colts Report – Round 14
The South Fremantle colts let another opportunity slip on Sunday beaten by a valiant West Perth side by two points.
The boys’ endeavours shown in the closing stages came far too late in the game as victory had already slipped from our grasp earlier in the day. West Perth took the initiative as the home side’s lack of intensity gave up too many opportunities in the early going.
South were held goalless in the first term and had to wait until Corey Salmon goaled on the 16-minute mark of the second term to register a major on the scoreboard. By this time West Perth booted four goals and missed a couple of opportunities to take the lead away from the Bulldogs.
The deficit could have been much greater if not for the good work of Noah Strom and Jamie Foster in the back-line. They were ably assisted by youngster Daniel Cabassi as all three kept their side within striking distance.
With both sides kicking two goals for the second term, West Perth went in at half-time maintaining their two goal advantage. After the main break the South players seemed to find their feet and finally reeled in the shaky Falcons side.
With Jacob Dragovich losing his tag and Corey Salmon placing pressure on opponents the Bulldog had set up a final term that was looking to go to the wire. And this it did, as the difference between the sides was minimal all day.
It was pleasing to see some of the younger team members lift to give the side a chance to win a game that was never likely earlier in the day. Brandon Donaldson and Jake Florenca lifted their work rate and carried their team mates to the line. Unfortunately their efforts were not matched by many of their older more experienced team mates.
Congratulations to Blake Hanssen, Brett Byron and Duran Patch on making their debut with us on the weekend. Brett and Duran are both products from our northern zones, Brett from Carnarvon and Duran from Wiluna.
Luckily the teams below us on the ladder have also stumbled over the past few weeks and we still enjoy a slight buffer. This week’s game will be vital as Claremont are close behind and would love the opportunity to close the gap.
