Todd Curley Q and A – Round 12
SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley's weekly question and answer session during the 2015 McDonald's WAFL Premiership season.
Curley spoke following Saturday's loss to Subiaco at Medibank Stadium and looks ahead to his first time as an opposition coach at HBF Arena against West Perth this Saturday.
QUESTION: The team worked hard and you couldn't question their endeavour but the skill level just wasn't where you needed it to be?
ANSWER: Yeah we probably made some real skill errors early and they are a good side so they capitalised and hurt us on the scoreboard and we could never really get our zip and run going. It didn't look like we ever had it so that's disappointing.
Q: Neither side would have felt like they were at their best, what can you take out of it?
A: I think they had a couple of injured players so they were pretty keen I guess to make it a scrap and unfortunately we probably didn't react well enough to it at the time. We probably played into their hands a bit but to their credit they made that happen.
Q: Improved from the last time you played Subiaco, where do you need to keep getting better?
A: I think we are still learning more about ourselves than the opposition to be honest. We're still in a position where we don't really think we have strung together four really strong quarters of footy playing our way, so it's still about us improving ourselves at this stage.
Q: Adam Guglielmana continues to get the big jobs and does them well. Kept Shane Yarran quiet, I'm not sure there is a better small defender in the competition?
A: Not in my opinion, he hasn't been beaten all year and he was probably pretty stiff not to get a game in the State side. But he just continues to do the job every week, week in week out. He was fantastic.
Q: He has his 100th game next week as well, must be nice having him to use on the opposition's best forwards?
A: He's a terrific competitor and he's been super for us this year with how he has gone about it. He's having a really good year and he's waited a long time to get to 100 games so I think it will be a big day for him.
Q: Josh Pullman was quiet and then got hurt, how's he pulled up?
A: I think he's just got a corkie so he should be fine.
Q: Haiden Schloithe played mostly forward in his first game back and showed good signs?
A: It was his first game since Round 3 so he has got through the game well. Hopefully he can start to build some strong form going into the second half of the year.
Q: Big game now against West Perth up at Joondalup?
A: Yeah they are all going to be important games if you look at how it's panning out. It's a big game for us, a big game for them but for us we really want to bounce back and have a strong response to what was a pretty disappointing performance against Subiaco.
Q: You played so well to beat them in Round 1, do you take much from that or was it too long ago?
A: Regardless of whether it was one week or 12 weeks ago it really doesn't have much say or input into this week. I know a few of their personnel quite well but it's a team we need to beat and it's a game we need to turn up to play well in.
Q: Your first time going to Joondalup as an opposition coach. Thoughts on that?
A: I guess the only difference is I'll be sitting up the other end but they are a passionate club with passionate supporters, but hopefully some South Fremantle supporters can make the trek up the highway.
