TODD Curley savoured seeing his old AFL club the Western Bulldogs breakthrough for a premiership in 2016 and saw plenty that South Fremantle can now take from that heading into the 2017 WAFL season.

Curley is now entering his third season as South Fremantle coach and the growth has been obvious with a building year in 2015 and then in 2016 the Bulldogs finished the home and away season in second position, beat West Perth in a qualifying final and ended up playing three finals in their first September appearance since 2011.

He was happy with the growth of the group even if the finals losses to grand finalists Subiaco and Peel Thunder didn’t go to plan.

WHILE I had some personal milestones in 2016 to celebrate including my 100th game and breaking the games record as captain, all that I was focused on is getting this club back into the finals and it was a great effort for us to do so.

Season 2016 was a great ride for the club and especially for us as a playing group. We started really well winning our first five games, I feel this was due to the commitment and effort shown through the pre-season by everyone involved. We all came back prepared and hungry to compete and improve and were all on the same page at the start of our campaign.

We ticked along nicely as the season went on never leaving the top three sides and finishing up in second place on the ladder heading into the finals, a place we haven’t been a part of for quite some time. It was great to see the hard work put in over the summer was paying off and all worthwhile.

SEASON 2016 brought a year of change, with a host of personnel and structural changes made within the South Fremantle development academy. While improvement was seen there still remains plenty of room for improvement going forward. 

The colts program kicked off in mid-November with over 80 players invited to pre-season. Players were put through their paces from day one. Our overarching focus was a professional approach. Pre-season was gruelling but the playing group enjoyed plenty of fun along the way.

The camp bought the group together. It was evident early on that the players had bought into a 'team first' attitude. By March our list was narrowed down to 45, all whom have come from within our local and regional district. Dylan Brown was named captain and Boyd Woods vice-captain. Both boys did an outstanding job at leading the group all year.

WE made a lot of improvements in a lot of areas during the 2016 season to go from winning eight games to 15, playing finals for the first time, playing three finals and winning one.

In that first final against West Perth, we were really good and then against Subi we were really good for two and-a-half quarters but it was just the last 15 minutes of the third quarter that let us down. Then we got jumped against Peel and fought our way back in to still be a chance early in the last quarter but couldn’t take our chances again.

Upon reflection we still have a pretty young group and we think it was a step in the right direction in 2016. The challenge now is to come prepared to work hard again and make it another year in 2017 where we reach finals first of all and give ourselves a chance.

THE WA Football Raffle 2016 supporting grassroots footy in WA has been extended to cease sales on Saturday January 28, 2017. 

Draw date of the raffle will take place on Friday February 10. Results will be published in Wednesday's February 15 West Australian Newspapers. 

Approval for the extension has been granted by the Department of Racing, Gaming and Liquor on Wednesday December 7.

A MEMORABLE 2016 for the South Fremantle Football Club concluded on Friday night with the Gerry Bahen Classic at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with Marlion Pickett capping his outstanding year by taking out the annual race.

The final training session of the year for the Bulldogs has coincided with the Gerry Bahen Classic on the Friday night for some time now in what is a popular event for players, support staff and supporters alike.

Another good crowd was in attendance for the occasion on Friday night with the event named in honour of the late Gerry Bahen who was a loyal clubman at South Fremantle.

SOUTH Fremantle's 2017 McDonald's WAFL Premiership Season begins with a bang against Subiaco at Fremantle Community Bank Oval in a twilight Round 1 fixture.

The Bulldogs will take on a Lions team that has played in the past three WAFL grand finals on Saturday March 18 at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the twilight bounce down time of 4.15pm.

South Fremantle is coming off a strong 2016 season where the Bulldogs made the finals for the first time since 2011, and went on to beat West Perth in a qualifying final before losing to the grand final teams Subiaco and Peel Thunder the next two weeks.

THE South Fremantle Football Club wishes to announce the appointment of Paul Litherland as reserves/development coach for the 2017 WAFL season to take over the helm for the Bulldogs' reserves side. 

The role as reserves/development coach became available when Tony Walters decided to step down after a successful period at the helm with Litherland proving the outstanding candidate to lead the South Fremantle reserves group moving forward.

Litherland arrived at South Fremantle from East Perth and over the past two years has served as an assistant to both the Bulldogs' reserves team while also helping with the league side.

THE South Fremantle Football Club has released its Annual Report and Year Book for 2016 in conjunction with last week's Annual General Meeting including a full wrap on and off the field from the past 12 months at the Bulldogs.

The Annual Report and Year Book is a source of pride for South Fremantle as the club endeavours to provide its members with the best, most informative and thorough publication of its type in the WAFL.

Following a 2016 season that saw all three grades at South Fremantle qualify for the finals, there was plenty to reflect on as well in what must be deemed a successful and vastly improved season on the field for the Bulldogs.
