SUNDAY'S WAFL preliminary final didn't start well for South Fremantle and never really improved against Peel Thunder but that doesn't change the fact that 2016 was a giant step forward for the Bulldogs.

The result at Fremantle Community Bank Oval might not have gone South Fremantle's way with Peel running out 39-point winners to advance to the grand final, but it doesn’t hide the fact that it's been a successful 2016 season for the Bulldogs.

Having not played in the finals since 2011 or won a final since the 2009 grand final, South Fremantle finished the 2016 season in second position on the ladder with a 15-5 record.

SOUTH Fremantle hosts Peel Thunder in Sunday's WAFL preliminary final at Fremantle Community Bank Oval with the Bulldogs looking to book in a spot in the grand final for the first time since 2009.

South Fremantle will either qualify for its first WAFL Grand Final since 2009 or Peel Thunder its first in history by winning Sunday's preliminary final.

Subiaco awaits in the 2016 Grand Final next Sunday at Domain Stadium with the Lions shooting for a second premiership hat-trick of the past decade, but winning into a decider will be a new experience for the majority of whichever team wins Sunday's preliminary final.

The reserves and colts preliminary finals will also be held at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday. Perth takes on East Perth in the colts starting at 9am and then Claremont faces East Fremantle in the reserves starting at 11.45am.

JOSH Pullman has been one of South Fremantle's great success stories moving into defence in 2016 and he has no doubt that learning at training by playing on the Bulldogs' dynamic forwards has helped make his transition work so well.

Pullman is just one of three South Fremantle players who will play in Sunday's preliminary final against Peel Thunder at Fremantle Community Bank Oval who has previously experienced a WAFL Grand Final before.

That was back in 2008 when Pullman graduated from being a colts premiership captain at Swan Districts to cementing a spot at centre half-forward in the league side at Swans who made it all the way to the Grand Final before losing to Subiaco.

THE last time I played in a final up until a couple of weeks ago was exactly 10 years ago at Frankston Park when I was playing for the Mornington under-18s against Frankston YCW.

We lost that game by 10 goals and that was the extent of my experience playing finals football when I arrived over here in the west to play with South Fremantle this year.

To say I was pretty desperate to play finals footy would have to be one of the great understatements.

QUESTION: It seems to be a similar story every time you play Subiaco. You stick with them for most of the game but they blow you away in a 20-minute burst and that happened again either side of three quarter-time?
ANSWER: We dominated the first 10 minutes of the third quarter but kicked 1.2 and three out on the full. If you don’t take your chances against good teams, eventually the momentum will turn and they will have their turn. They certainly took their chances and it was disappointing we didn’t take ours.

SUNDAY didn't go to plan for South Fremantle with the seasons ending for the colts and reserves teams while the league side went down to Subiaco but the Bulldogs now have a home preliminary final to prepare for.

South Fremantle's colts and reserves were both playing in first semi-final matches at Medibank Stadium on Sunday and ended up losing to East Perth and East Fremantle respectively to bring an end to their 2016 campaigns.

Meanwhile, South Fremantle's league side went down to Subiaco in the second semi-final but the Bulldogs now have another chance in the preliminary final to make the Grand Final.

The Bulldogs and Royals colts meet in the cut-throat encounter at Leederville on Sunday beginning at 9.55am.

The winner will advance to next Sunday's preliminary final against the loser of the second semi-final at HBF Arena between Perth and Claremont. The season for the loser will be over.

Last week South Fremantle's colts lost to Claremont by 32 points at Fremantle Community Bank Oval to now be in a cut-throat situation for the rest of the finals starting on Sunday against East Perth.

SOUTH Fremantle's reserves look to keep its hopes of a back-to-back WAFL premiership alive on Sunday taking on East Fremantle in the first semi-final at Medibank Stadium.

The Bulldogs and Sharks meet in the first semi-final in the reserves at the Leederville venue starting at 12.25pm on Sunday.

The winner will advance to next Sunday's preliminary final against the loser of the second semi-final at HBF Arena between East Perth and Claremont. The loser will see their season come to an end in the reserves for 2016.
