IT might be a significantly different looking South Fremantle team, but after a Round 1 victory the Bulldogs can make it a perfect start to the 2019 WAFL season hosting Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.
There have been significant changes to the South Fremantle team from last year's preliminary final loss to West Perth to last Saturday's Round 1 win of the 2019 season against Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.
However, it was a winning start to the season still for the Bulldogs and now is the chance to make it a 2-0 start to the new campaign hosting Perth at the port this Saturday.
WHAT South Fremantle coach Todd Curley had to say following the Round 1 WAFL victory over Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval to open the 2019 season.
QUESTION: Round 1 is not often pretty but you would be happy enough to come away with the four points?
ANSWER: You're always happy when you get four points. It wasn’t our best day and clearly it was a pretty scrappy game, and it wouldn’t have been a great game to watch. I thought our effort was pretty good and I thought we showed a bit of character in the second half when clearly things weren’t going how we wanted them to. We hung in there and worked pretty hard, and got away with a win.
Q: Your expectations of what you're happy with in Round 1 would be different to later in the season, but were you happy enough with what you saw?
A: You want to see some stuff that you've practiced and a few of those things we got bits of them right, but we probably never got all of it right all at once. There's lots to take out of it though. Caleb Datson in his first game was a real shining light. Even if the first half he was the one who looked composed and used the ball well. We had a lot of young players and would have had half a dozen who have played less than five games. They would have learned a lot and will get better.
SOUTH Fremantle made a winning start to the 2019 WAFL season on Saturday holding on to beat Swan Districts by four points at Steel Blue Oval.
It was a significantly new-look South Fremantle team running out onto the Bassendean venue for the first game of the season to the one that has reached the last three preliminary finals.
But the Bulldogs still managed to be victorious and to make it five straight victories over Swan Districts, winning 8.5 (53) to 7.7 (49).
THE beginning of a new era at South Fremantle begins this Saturday with the Bulldogs beginning the 2019 WAFL season on the road to Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.
There's no denying the change over the off-season at South Fremantle coming off losing a third successive preliminary final to fall heartbreakingly short of a first Grand Final appearance since 2009.
Following that loss to West Perth, South Fremantle has lost some all-time greats of the club including Ashton Hams, Ryan Cook, Cory Dell'Olio and Ben Saunders, while workhorses Shane Hockey and Jarrod Parry also retired and Matthew Parker was drafted to St Kilda.
But depth has long been one of South Fremantle's great strengths through that run of three successive preliminary finals and now players waiting in the wings biding their time will get to show what they are capable of throughout 2019.
ANOTHER pre-season down and another season about to begin. It’s been a long build up to Round 1 and with a lot of fresh faces there is plenty of energy and enthusiasm around the club.
After losing upwards of 700 games experience over the off-season with some legends of the club retiring, who will be sorely missed, we had to move on quickly.
Personally, I have had an interrupted pre-season with an on-going injury, however this has allowed me to have a good look at some of our aspiring youngsters coming up through the ranks. In particular, I like the look of Kyle Hamersley with his silky skills and just how he has taken on the pre-season with everything he has, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see him debuting at some stage this year.
DESPITE the loss of experience and quality over summer, South Fremantle coach Todd Curley is confident the Bulldogs can remain a force in 2019 largely because of those in the wings who have been desperate for opportunities at league level.
South Fremantle has had a strong run for three years now having finished the home and away season in each of the three campaigns in second positions before ending up in the preliminary finals, but not quite being able to advance to a Grand Final.
On the back of the shock 2018 preliminary final loss to West Perth at Fremantle Community Bank Oval, it marked the end of an era with the host of stars from that era and even from before that deciding it was their time to move on.
SOUTH Fremantle's official WAFL pre-season hit outs will see them take on the league's last two premiers Peel Thunder and Subiaco ahead of the Round 1 clash with Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval.
South Fremantle will have two solid hit outs over the next two weekends all in the lead up to Round 1 of the 2019 WAFL season.
That Round 1 clash will see the Bulldogs take on Swan Districts at Steel Blue Oval on Saturday April 6.
The build up to that now begins on Saturday March 23 against Peel Thunder at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.
