SOUTH Fremantle started the 2020 WAFL season in the best possible way with a 95-point victory to make it 10 straight wins against East Fremantle in a complete performance on Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

It was only fitting that the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season resumed with what will be the only Fremantle Derby of the season, but it was South Fremantle who made quite the statement with a 95-point win against East Fremantle.

It's hard to imagine a larger contrast from South Fremantle's last game of 2019 now to their first of 2020. The Bulldogs lost last year's Grand Final to Subiaco by 96 points but started off 2020 in the best possible way with the 99-point turnaround to hammer the Sharks on Saturday at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

THE massive weekend at Fremantle Community Bank Oval to mark the return of football to Western Australia continues on Sunday with a full day of women's action highlighted by South Fremantle's debut in the Optus WAFLW Premiership Season.

There's great excitement right around football in WA this weekend with the return of AFL football to Optus Stadium for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic struck, and with the WAFL competition opening with South Fremantle hosting East Fremantle on Saturday.

But that's far from all there is to be looking forward to as the WAFLW competition for 2020 gets underway and for the first time South Fremantle is going to be involved with the Bulldogs having been granted their full license a year earlier than previously anticipated.

NOW entering his third season as South Fremantle captain, Dylan Main is emerging impressively into a strong leader at the Bulldogs and that's evidenced by his approach to helping his group not just forget last year's Grand Final, but now make amends for it.

They were massive shoes to fill for Main when he was appointed captain ahead of the 2018 WAFL season taking over from Ryan Cook who had been the longest serving skipper in the long and rich history of the South Fremantle Football Club that is now in its 120th season.

But the fact that his first season as captain still saw him having Cook playing alongside him to help him out along with other strong, experienced leaders like Ashton Hams, Shane Hockey, Cory Dell'Olio, Adam McIntosh, Shaun Bewick and company allowed for a smooth transition.

THE wait between game 149 and 150 has been quite the arduous one but Haiden Schloithe couldn’t be prouder or more excited to bring up the milestone this Saturday to open the 2020 WAFL season as he qualifies for life membership at South Fremantle.

When Schloithe was growing up in Katanning dreaming of playing for South Fremantle one day and then idolising what a couple of future teammates were doing for the Bulldogs a decade ago in the form of Kyle and Ashton Hams, never did he think he could achieve what he could.

If you had told a young Haiden Schloithe a decade a go that entering the 2020 season, he would have already won a Sandover Medal, three WJ Hughes Medal as South Fremantle's fairest and best and played for Western Australia three times, he would have thought you were joking.

NOW that we are just focused on Round 1 and that it's so close, it's exciting after we did initially get so close to playing, did a whole pre-season and did a lot of work to get our fitness levels to a point where they were the same as previous years, or better.

To have had all that work taken away from us that we'd done over the pre-season back in March was pretty shattering to be honest. It was a tough time there and for me personally I know I found it tough to keep on training, and to keep up the motivation.

We've got a newborn daughter and my priorities kind of changed once we went into lockdown and I had to do the dad sort of stuff a lot more, and help out the wife as much as I could. Training took a backseat for a while there obviously because of that, but then we got word from the WAFL that we eventually would get back up and going.

THIS has already been a year like no other but the excitement is building ahead of the return to somewhat normality and to celebrate that, not only will Fremantle Community Bank Oval host a Fremantle Derby but it's transformed into the Festival of Football.

There is no bigger, longer or more traditional rivalry in all of sport in Western Australia than that which exists between South Fremantle and East Fremantle so it's only fitting that the WAFL's return in 2020 is highlighted by a Fremantle Derby on Saturday July 18 at Fremantle Community Bank Oval.

But this is no usual Round 1 match up given everything that 2020 has already thrown our way and as a result, it is going to be no usual derby day that the Bulldogs will be hosting down at the port as we celebrate the return to football for the new season.

WHEN you have spent the lifetime in football that Todd Curley has, there's little you haven’t experienced but this build up to the 2020 season has been like nothing else but the South Fremantle coach can't fault the work his playing group has put in regardless.

Whether it's coming through the ranks as an exciting young talent at West Perth, having a stint at Collingwood before coming back to be a WAFL premiership star and then become a rock solid AFL player in strong Western Bulldogs teams, or then finishing his career back at the Falcons and immediately becoming senior coach, then working as an AFL assistant at Fremantle and since now coaching South Fremantle the last five years, there was little new for Curley to experience.

Then things were relatively on track like normal in preparation for the 2020 WAFL season. Curley had guided South Fremantle though another whole pre-season, they've completed their planned intra-club matches and then were preparing to play real opposition for the first time.

The South Fremantle Football Club has today launched its final major member campaign prior to the commencement of the 2020 WAFL and WAFLW seasons, titled 2000 Members In Sight.

Currently sitting at 1885 members at time of writing, the Club has been buoyed by huge support and commitment from Souths members thus far in 2020, the generosity and loyalty from our community has been remarkable.
