South Fremantle Football Club has been granted a licence to compete in an expanded 2020 Optus WAFL Women’s competition commencing on July 18. 

The addition of South Fremantle will see the WAFLW expand to six teams following the success of the inaugural season in 2019 with five founding teams – Claremont, East Fremantle, Peel, Subiaco and Swan Districts.

STEVEN Edwards had a tremendous three-year stint at South Fremantle up until taking a break in 2019, but the pull to return to the Bulldogs was there the whole time and now after a delayed start, he can't wait to get things rolling in 2020.

Having initially moved to Perth from Albany, Edwards began his WAFL journey at Claremont but joined South Fremantle ahead of the 2016 season and went on to produce three terrific seasons.

In teams that reached preliminary finals in each of the 2016, 2017 and 2018 WAFL campaigns, Edwards was a key cog in the wheel at the Bulldogs largely settling into a role as a small defender who was creative, and capable of setting up play coming out of the back-line.

SOUTH Fremantle coach Todd Curley has been blown away by the support the Bulldogs have received during the COVID-19 enforced delay to the WAFL season and can't wait to reward those fans, members and sponsors when action resumes.

There's no secret that the delayed start to the 2020 WAFL season thanks to the worldwide coronavirus pandemic raised some concerns over the financial viability of some clubs in the competition given the inability to bring any money in.

But at South Fremantle, the sponsors have reconfirmed their support to the club and then the fans have signed up in large numbers as members with the initial target of 1750 having now been reached for the first time in a decade.

KNOWING he is one game away from life membership at South Fremantle and potentially a dozen matches from that elusive premiership has helped Bulldogs great Haiden Schloithe stay motivated through a challenging 2020 so far for us all.

It's been a particularly long wait for Schloithe and his South Fremantle teammates who endured a 96-point Grand Final loss last September to Subiaco at Optus Stadium having finally broken their preliminary final hoodoo just to get there.

The Bulldogs players have now had to stew over that result ever since and have so far been unable to get back onto the field to begin the path of rectifying what happened against the Lions, and potentially going one better in 2020.
