SOUTH Fremantle and Subiaco sit at opposite ends of the ladder but if the Bulldogs are able to limit the Lions' scoring power then they have enough firepower themselves to make it a real contest on Saturday at Fremantle Oval.

Subiaco now sits in second position on the WAFL ladder having won three straight matches, and five of its last six to now sit on an 11-4 record to be significant percentage ahead of the third-placed Swan Districts.

The Lions are still eyeing off the minor premiership as well with them sitting only the one game behind East Perth, with a similar percentage and a game still to go in the run home against the Royals.

MY SEASON so far has been OK without been anything too outstanding. I found a bit of consistency from about the fourth or fifth game and then strung some decent games in a row together which I wasn’t too unhappy about after coming off being out of league footy for 12 months. I'm then not really sure what happened. I had a good game against Peel and then an OK game against East Fremantle, and then played the three worst games of my career.

That knocked me around a little a bit and made me question whether I still had it for this level anymore and where I was at with my football. Hase was real good with me though. After my first quiet game against East Perth he told me what he thought I needed to improve on, and then the next week when I didn’t play so well against Swan Districts he still pushed me, and didn’t threaten me with the axe or anything. He was still really encouraging and just told me what I needed to do and then I didn’t get a kick again against West Perth. Hase told me leading up to that game that I really needed to get a kick so I wasn’t in any doubt with where I was at with him so I was happy with the whole way that was handled.

IT TOOK almost five years of strong WAFL football with South Fremantle for Paul Duffield to prove that he could be a regular AFL player but he now certainly has done that as he prepares for game No. 150 with the Dockers this Saturday against St Kilda at Etihad Stadium.

Duffield grew up in West Arthur before making the move for high school where he went to Aquinas and found his footballing feet before lobbing at the Bulldogs and ending up making his league debut in 2004 in his first year on Fremantle's rookie-list.

He played 14 matches that season with the Bulldogs including the first semi-final loss to Swan Districts and remained a key player in South Fremantle's team across half-back in the 2005 premiership winning side.

GROWING up with football has taught me a lot of different values in life, starting out in 'nippers' on a frost covered oval in Williams at 8am on a Saturday morning to the present and becoming a senior player at the proud WAFL club in South Fremantle. The journey in between has been a hell of a lot of fun, but has also shaped the way life is for me today. 

Growing up in Williams, 160km South East of Perth, was where l learnt how to kick, mark and even occasionally handball. Williams has a great small town community who are right into their sport whether it be footy, cricket, hockey, netball or golf. It has a rich history in all sports and country weeks and for such a small town the success that it has had completing against such bigger regional towns is a testament to those who are passionate and led the way for the younger generation.

SOUTH Fremantle overcame the absence of its captain and two of its most important players, and fought back from coughing up the lead in the last quarter to beat Perth by 12 points on Saturday at Lathlain Park to win the Cable-Michael Cup for the first time.

South Fremantle came into the game without captain Ryan Cook, dual premiership star Ashton Hams and 85-gamer Adam Guglielmana following the previous week's loss to Claremont with the Bulldogs also on a six-game losing streak.

However, Perth was also on a seven-match losing run of its own coming into Saturday's contest with not only the Cable-Michael Cup on the line, but the winner to also move clear of being in contention of the wooden spoon for 2014.

South Fremantle led at every change of the game by one-point at quarter-time, seven points at half-time, 17 points at three quarter-time and then the margin got out to four goals during the final term but the match had one more twist to take.

Perth went on to kick four straight goals during the fourth quarter to suddenly take the lead and have all the momentum, but South Fremantle again found a way to steady and kick the game's last two goals thanks to Craig White and Paul Mugambwa to secure the 13.11 (89) to 10.17 (77).
