MASON Shaw has been remarkably consistent as a reliable goalkicker for South Fremantle ever since returning from Port Adelaide and he's been rewarded in 2020 by winning the Bernie Naylor Medal as the WAFL's leading goal scorer.

Shaw returned to South Fremantle following his time in the AFL system at Port Adelaide back in 2016, and while he initially shared a role in a star-studded forward-line and now is the main spearhead, his goalkicking ability has been remarkably consistent no matter the situation.

Shaw kicked another two goals on Saturday night against Perth at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park to give him 23 goals in eight matches for the shortened 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season.

QUESTION: How do you feel coming out of that game, they dominated the last quarter and you just couldn’t get out of their forward-line?
ANSWER: Obviously we had some different personnel with young guys down there but we couldn’t get our hands on the ball even around the middle. We didn’t use the ball that well either. We kept kicking it back to their numbers which is what they wanted. We didn’t use the ball well enough.

Q: Against a team with so much to play for, were you reasonably happy with what you did for the first three quarters?
A: We did some stuff right but it felt like we were always chasing our tails a bit, and shuffling the deck chairs a bit. You couldn’t question the effort and I think the boys really tried hard, but just at times during the day we lost the composure with the ball and they scored.

IT was an emotional evening at Lathlain's Mineral Resources Park on Saturday when Perth beat South Fremantle to reach the finals for the first time since 1997, but the Bulldogs now turn their focus to making the most of their minor premiership winning season.

While understandably all the focus was on Perth's quest to reach the finals for the first time in 23 years, and then since has been garnered around their achievement of doing so, it shouldn’t diminish what South Fremantle has achieved in the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season already.

South Fremantle already had the minor premiership secured no matter the result of Saturday's game against Perth and the Bulldogs still did well to be in a winning position with a 15-point lead when the three quarter-time sounded.

I WAS asked to talk about my battle with concussion in this column and when thinking back to how bad things got at one point, it caused me to develop such bad anxiety to the point where just going out to have a beer with my mates was a real struggle.

It was just the fact that everything that I did brought on the symptoms I'd suffer from the concussion. I was just scared to do anything to trigger it. It got to the point where I had to quit my job. I was working in my trade as a boilermaker but I just couldn’t function to do that anymore. When I had to stop working in my trade and then went to study personal training, even just to try and read books and study, and get through a day as a student was really hard as well.

It was just such a slow, long grind to get through every day. I'd liken it to when you'd walk outside and you would know it's a nice day with the sun shining and everything, but for me that would all be blanketed by this fog which would dull all my senses. It dulled my smell, I had really bad hypersensitivity to light so couldn’t stay in the sun or it would hurt my eyes and I'd get bad headaches which turned into migraines.

It has been a remarkable performance to date from South Fremantle to have won all seven matches to date in this shortened Optus WAFL Premiership Season following the COVID-19 enforced break.

Things got underway in scintillating fashion with a 95-point hammering of East Fremantle before two tight wins against West Perth Claremont before a statement 50-point victory against Subiaco.

QUESTION: You left yourselves a lot of work to do by three quarter-time but that last quarter was something pretty special?
ANSWER: We identified probably two or three things that I thought we could get better at even earlier in the game, we just couldn’t get them all going at once. I thought after quarter-time we were better and then in the third quarter we were better again but didn’t get the reward on the scoreboard. There were a couple of half chances that we missed and that left us open, and we conceded scores the other way. And then in the last quarter, obviously Higgo was huge in the middle and we looked a bit more dangerous forward and kicked straight. It was important.

SOUTH Fremantle produced the most remarkable of comebacks with eight goals in the last quarter to overcome a 32-point deficit to beat East Perth by 22 points at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Saturday.

The Bulldogs came into the game knowing that a win would not only keep them undefeated for the 2020 Optus WAFL Premiership Season, but also lock away the minor premiership and home ground advantage for the second semi-final.

But East Perth were also playing to keep their own finals hopes alive and were on a two-game winning streak on arrival at the port, and then by midway through the third quarter were in control of the game leading by 32 points.

LOOKING back to my last year at Freo, in hindsight you can see that the writing was probably on the wall but when you are in the actual situation and you have high hopes of still playing AFL footy, and sticking around at the club that you love, you kind of don’t think about it in that way. 

But I was actually pretty lucky in terms of that last year because I still played 12 games including 10 in-a-row to finish so the conversation I had with my management was about not being sure what was happening and waiting until the end of the year to see how it all was shaping up, and then make a decision from there. So when you look back and you think about it, the writing was on the wall but when I was playing those last 10 games I couldn’t help but think I was a chance to go on. 

I still wasn’t naïve and I knew that it was probably pretty unlikely I would be back the next year, but I still had hopes of being able to contribute. I felt like I was getting played out of position a little bit too so I felt if I got another pre-season in and got fitter, and got back to playing my normal position instead of up forward then I thought I could make the most of that one more chance.
