IT has been a challenging inaugural WAFL Women's season for South Fremantle but the Bulldogs delivered their best performance in the final round on Sunday to push minor premiers Subiaco all the way.

It was at times a rude awakening to the world of the WAFL Women's competition for South Fremantle on short notice of them entering for the 2020 season, but the signs have been growing over the opening six rounds.

The Bulldogs were virtually getting better each week and they then saved their most encouraging performance for last on Sunday against a Subiaco team that has finished clear on top of the WAFLW ladder for the second straight season.

JUST because it was top against bottom, and winless team up against an undefeated one didn’t mean South Fremantle would be handed anything Peel Thunder on Saturday, but the Bulldogs did enough to come away with the 35-point win.

South Fremantle just couldn’t convert on their control of the game early on kicking eight behinds in the first quarter, but eventually the Bulldogs worked their way on top to come away with the solid victory at Mandurah's David Grays Arena to remain undefeated in the 2020 WAFL season.

The win all but guarantees South Fremantle will finish on top of the ladder and earn a home second semi-final while Peel remains the only winless team this WAFL season.

QUESTION: If I told you at half-time when you had kicked one goal that you would end up winning by six, I think you would have taken that? 
ANSWER: The scoreboard was weird wasn’t it. I thought we dominated for most of the game and just didn’t convert, missed some shots and had some shots that didn’t even score. A couple of times, I think more out of our poor ball use made it hard to defend, and they scored. We invited them back in.

Q: Do you think the goalkicking is just a one off for this week or is it something you are concerned about?
A: I think we've been pretty good along the way, we go about 65 per cent most of the time. There were certainly some chances that we blundered and some of them were before we even got a shot. There's some stuff to work on.

SOUTH Fremantle's first ever WAFL Women's season comes to an end on Sunday with the Bulldogs presented the chance to put in an encouraging performance against a Subiaco team already locked into top spot.

South Fremantle was accepted into the 2020 Optus WAFL Women's Premiership Season on relatively short notice for the first time to join East Fremantle, Swan Districts, Subiaco, Claremont and Peel Thunder who took part in the first WAFLW season in 2019.

So the Bulldogs were always up against it coming into the delayed 2020 season and it has been tough going over the opening six games.

SOUTH Fremantle returns from the bye on Saturday to begin its last three weeks of the Optus WAFL Premiership Season before finals and can't afford to take Peel Thunder lightly in Mandurah.

The Bulldogs were in tremendous form prior to the Round 6 bye having won all five of their matches to date in the 2020 WAFL season. 

That has them sitting pretty on top of the ladder with three rounds of the home and away season remaining before finals.

SOUTH Fremantle continues to fight hard in its inaugural WAFL Women's season and the inclusion of Mim Strom has only gone to show why she is such a key player for the Fremantle Dockers moving forward.

Claremont needed to win the game against the winless South Fremantle to maintain its place in the top four with one round of the home and away WAFLW season to remaining.

The Tigers were made to fight hard early to put a score on the board with the home team only managing the one goal in the first quarter with the Bulldogs scoring a behind.

SOUTH Fremantle continues to improve the longer the 2020 Optus WAFL Women's Premiership Season goes on and the Bulldogs will look to put in another encouraging performance against Claremont on Sunday.

It hasn’t been an easy initiation to the WAFL Women's competition in 2020 with the other teams all having been there during 2019 to set the standard, but there have been some more encouraging signs in the recent weeks.

South Fremantle's WAFLW team didn’t manage to score in the opening two games against East Fremantle and Peel Thunder before it was Chloe Taylor who scored the Bulldogs first ever goal in the competition in Round 3 against Claremont.

QUESTION: You know Swan Districts would make themselves hard to beat and they were, and it took until the last 10 minutes for you to get on top but you eventually did do enough to win?
ANSWER: They've been pretty good to be honest. They haven’t won any games but they've had patches against really good teams where they move the ball really quick, and challenge you. Again we didn’t start very well and I thought they hunted us, and we made a couple of really bad turnovers early that cost us. But I thought after quarter-time our intensity and willingness to compete around the ball certainly improved, and then from there we probably dominated the inside-50 count and just didn’t get it on the scoreboard. But we got no injuries which was a positive and we now have five wins so you can't complain.

SOUTH Fremantle's team in the Optus WAFL Women's Premiership Season continues to show signs of improvement despite a loss to Swan Districts on Sunday afternoon.

South Fremantle's female football teams were back on home turf at Fremantle Community Bank Oval on Sunday to host Swan Districts, and in the WAFLW encounter, it was the most competitive performance yet that the Bulldogs have delivered.

After going scoreless in their opening two matches against East Fremantle and Peel Thunder, South Fremantle broke through for its first ever WAFLW goal in Round 3 against Claremont before then backing up last Saturday against Subiaco by kicking multiple goals for the first time in a match.
